Visor DeLuxe, T39 and GPRS

Hi,

Is there anyone out there who have managed to get the Visor to establish a GPRS-connection with the Ericsson T39, or might have any clues on how to?

I�ve installed all the neccessary software (IrLink 1.5 and SerIrCommLib.prc), or so i believe.

When i run the IrLinks 'detect devices' it recognizes the phone but when i try to connect it says 'Error. modem not found (0x1106)".

What have i missed?

I'm probably really really wrong on this, but here goes: if memory serves me right, GRPS is not an IP connection, but it simply pushes data to and from the phone over radio/pager frequencies, similar to the Blackberry or the Palm VII. To do what you want to do, you need to use the phone as a modem, meaning that you're going to need a dial-up number of some kind.

Have you set the Network option in the IrLink prefs to IrDA?

I'm not too hot on GPRS, I'm afraid - you'll need to look at the docs for the phone and possibly hunt around to find out what details are needed to make it set up the connection.

However, I'd advise that before delving into GPRS, you establish whether or not the Visor is talking to the phone properly, making an ordinary GSM data call.

IrLink simply detects that there's a device in range when you use the discovery option, not that it's linked to the Visor's Network prefs.

So, I'd tap Mixed in the IrLink setup screen, make sure that Network (at the bottom) is set to IrDA, and then go to the Preferences app, choose Modem, and set to standard modem, no handshaking. Then go to Network, and enter the detail of a dial up isp, and hit connect, to see if the Visor can at least talk to the phone and make it dial.

If that works, then you can worry about the AT commands for setting up a GPRS connection.

I've not tried these myself, but one of the columnists for a magazine section I edit submitted text about it for the November 2001 issue of PCW. I paraphrase....

Essentially, since most gizmos are looking to set up a dialing string with ATD.

To specify GPRS, you dial *99# instead. You also need to specify the access point name given by your provider. That is done with the AT+CGDCONT command.

For example, AT+CGDCONT=1,"IP","serviceinfo" where you replace serviceinfo with the access point name. You can also, apparently, specify "PPP" or other protocols instead of plain IP. You may need to add a config option to disable wait for dial tone.

Of course, not having a GPRS phone myself, I can't test this, but I hope it gives you something to go on.

Not quite. GPRS is a packet data system, but it doesn't actually specify the higher level transport.

Most european carriers, however, are running IP over GPRS, to give the effect of an always-on connection to your mobile. I guess the reason for that is that there are an awful lot of mobile devices out there with IP stacks.

GPRS can do X25, PPP (and presumably therefore other things encapsulated in PPP) and some other stuff too, but IP is the main one being deployed.

Technologically, it's more similar, I think, to Packet Switch (PSS) or Frame Relay than to a pager type of connection.

Thanks for the replies, but, it won�t connect...not even GSM. I still get the "no modem" message.

Simple Ir-transfers, businesscards and such, work just fine, but when it comes to trigger the T39's modem it's a dead end.

Is there any other component, like SerIrCommLib.prc, to Palm OS v.3.1H3M that i might have missed?

Not as much as i hoped for...but thanks for the tip. There seems to be whole lot more configurations, and possibilities for errors, than i expected.

Thanks again for all your efforts. If i ever get the whole thing to work i'll put up a step-by-step guide

If you're getting "no modem", then I'd put money on the problem being with the IrLink setup. You don't need anything other than that Lib file and IrLink.

It might be worth downloading a terminal emulator program like Online, to see if you can get a response from the modem in the phone with that. Try connecting and sending an AT command, to see if you get the OK response.

Check carefully to make sure you have all the right things set up in IrLink - tick the Redirect Cradle checkbox, and for now select the IrDA 1.0 box on the main screen.

On the Preferences option, check the Notification splash for IrDA, so you can be sure that the system is at least trying to route serial data through the link.

If you can at least establish a connection to the phone, we'll be getting somewhere...
