What specifically is it that makes some of the wireless modems incompatable with the VDX?

If there is more than one possible answer - it isn't a dumb question!
Primarily the OS version. Omnisky in particular requires version 3.5 of the Palm OS and the VDX has version 3.1. There is also an issue with RF noise from some earlier model VDX models, but that has been fixed in the later models.

If at first you do succeed, try not to look astonished.
There really is only one current wireless modem - the Minstrel S from Novatel Wireless. So the problem is not the modem but the software that the companies provide with it. YadaYada's works with the Deluxe and OS 3.1, Omnisky's does not because it requires OS 3.5 to run, and I believe that GoAmerica's also requires 3.5.
