-- great site, implement live chat rooms? (http://discussion.visorcentral.com/vcforum/showthread.php?threadid=10441)

love the site, great resource for visor ! the boards are one of the best points about the site, and most of the time there are many active users. i think a chat room would be cool so users can talk in real time. just a suggestion as i realize it would not be too easy to implement.

Question

I have been looking for a good chat server/client... Any recommendations?

I had to do a bunch of searching last summer for a client. We ended up going with Digichat:

http://www.digichat.com

The decision was based more on its interface than anything. It was one of the few Java-based chat apps that had a good user interface.

It was a bit pricy, though, when compared to others...

Seems pretty neat... and they are in Gainesville!

I will take a drive over there later this week and see if I can work something out.

Marcus,

If it can be worked out, I'd be sure to give the chat rooms a try!

my only concern about chat rooms lies in what makes this site so great.

Whenever somebody has a problem, they post a question and it is answered (more often than not! ) for all to see.

with a chat room, somebody asks a question, it might get answered, but the answer won't be there later for somebody to reference. There are many threads on this board that contain A LOT of information. I just think a chat room may result in fewer threads and a dwindling of information that's available after the fact.

Although, it would definately clean up the long threads on 'abstract' topics!

Hoser, that's the very first thing I thought of too. Marcus, you may want to reserve the right to pull the chat plug, if that happens. If the content is no longer historically there for us to find, it changes to entire look and feel of the site, IMHO.

I wouldn't worry about the loss of important info, I have a feeling that most of the "chatting" going on in the room would be off topic discussions. If live trouble shooting was going on then maybe one of the people could copy and paste it into a post if they found it helpful.

Marcus- try and find a client that is compatible with one of the Palm OS browsers; what good is a chat room if you can't access it wirelessly on your Visor?

Talking I have one available!

If anyone would like to have a chat room available, I've set one up at http://www.cables4pdas.com. Just click on the Chat Room link on the lefthand Nav bar.

Exclamation

Chat is on its way... We just installed the server, and are working on configuring the client software.

The server is a standard IRC server, so you can either use our webbased Java client, a standard IRC client, or one of the IRC clients available for PalmOS. So lennonhead will be able to participate from his Visor

What chat rooms to you want available?
