Question

I know I'm new here, but I have noticed that your forums are relatively slow. Is there any particular reason for this? Am I the only one that thinks they are slow?

Thanks!
Lex

I guess that depends on how you define slow... most of the time, I get fairly good response on the site. There are occasions when it slows to a crawl but it's hard to determine whether it's my ISP or the VC server.

The site is very non-responsive. If I click to read an article, it make take a second or two before it begins to even load the page.

Other forums I've used seem much faster.

I have a cable modem, so it's definitely not on my side.

No big deal, I just thought your forum software might be bulky or your server slow.

Lex

That's no guarantee you'll get fast response .

Several factors come into play when accessing the web. There's probably numerous routers and switches between you and the VC server. If any of them hiccups or has any kind of problem, you'll see it in response times. Also, the number of users currently logged in and accessing the database will affect it as well. It really could be anything.

I've been having trouble myself today which I've attributed to the wonderful New England weather we're having... wind, rain, and thunder (in December!). My dial-up has disconnected several times today and general response times have been terrible.

Has it always been slow or just the last few days? There have been a few occasions in the past when a router or something just upstream from VC went on the fritz... but that affected everyone trying to access the site... talk about sloooow...

At peak points there is an extreme load on our sql server (over 80% CPU usage). We are currently reviewing the situation, and should resolve early next year (ie New DB Cluster).

Thanks,

Another potential speed bump

If you are using Netscape Navigator, some of the graphics embedded in signature blocks are a real problem because Navigator will not display a band until the entire contents of the band are received. Hit the "Stop" button, and the page may pop right up. This is an instance where IE is so much better . . . it displays the page, even if one or more images are still coming down the wire.

I have DSL and other sites are okay.

I started to notice approx 2-3 weeks ago that the "slow down" began. It only appears to be the initial page request. Once the page starts to load, it goes quickly. The only other delay is if someone's signature icon is not available.

dpdamour,

EXACTLY! It's the initial page request. Takes a long time before it starts to load the page.

Other discussion forum software/boards don't have this.

I didn't think it could only be me.

Thanks!
Lex

Ok, maybe that's what marcus was eluding to regarding the SQL server. I guess I just don't notice it as much on my piddly 56k dial-up . Here on my end, VC isn't really any slower than other sites most of the time.

sorry! it was REALLY hanging up! when i waited 5 minutes for the message creation screen, i thought that was long! then i typed the message and hit 'submit reply' and waited, and waited and waited...then I got the 'Page not available' screen!

so i hit the back button and hit 'submit reply again!' and waited and waited and waited...(actually i got A LOT of work done yesterday...i just minimized the window and did a bunch of stuff while waiting for the message to post!

in the long run, it seems to be back to normal today.

After adding RAM to the server over the weekend, we did some tweaking to the SQL database.

Let us know if you notice any performance increase...
either way, a new DB Server is schduled to go online in January.

Thanks,

It seems much better from my end, marcus. There's still some occasional delays, but not as noticeable as before (at least from my perspective).

Unhappy

I agree it is the slowest site I check regularly. I hope the changes in January help the speed of loading the discussion pages since I read them every day! It's quite addictive. Great site by the way.

Posted by marcus on 01-02-2001 03:07 PM:

Two new servers are incoming... The current VC server will be replaced by two identical 1.1Ghz Athlon, 1GB Ram, 36GB Ultra 160 Raid 2 systems.

VCWWW (machine one) will handle all web page requestes, while VCDB (machine two) will run the SQL engine.

The new machines should be live by mid January.

We upgraded MySQL to the latest version today, and added a bunch of new indexes to the tables.

Let us know if it is any faster...

BTW, the parts for the new servers are now slowly coming in.

Well, from where I am right now, service is MUCH faster than it was before (granted, the last time I checked VC from here was before school vacations).
