Cool

VNC is out for Palm devices? That's astounding. And too cool. I've got to get me some of that. I use VNC a LOT on my systems at work and home. Wow. If I can do that from my Visor and get email wirelessly. Oh, yeah. I got to get me some.

There's just a couple things that I'm curious about, and was wondering if anyone could help me out.

1) How do the monthly rates compare between YY and OS? What about if I were to use a Visorphone as a wireless modem (although I think I'd need to use a regular ISP in addition to the cellular service)?

2) Has anyone gotten some sort of telnet app running on their Visor with any of these modems? That's something that I spend a great deal of time at home using, and would like to be able to use on my Visor (although I'd probably need a stowaway to take full advantage of it).

can anyone clarify the way you can click around to get only the 6 months of contract instead of 12? i've been through all of the links in this thread, and no dice for me.

Also, after the obligatory 6 months are up, what is the monthly fee for the service?

telnet apps

You can find several telnet clients at http://www.palmgear.com

I have used ptelnet with yadayada and find it to work
very well. I actually use it to get to Pine on some of my unix boxes ;-)

Too bad nobody has made a SSH client for the
PalmOS...that would be great.

The monthly fees are 39.95/month, same as OmniSky.
The six month deal is here:

http://www.yadayada.com/DESKTOP/mai...trStatus=SIGNUP

You have to call and tell them you want the 12 month deal with the free modem. The six month commitment makes the modem cost $149.

Oh, but they do.

I just wish I had some sort of networking to my Visor to use it!

Angry Well this is just great.

So it's all well and good that YY is giving away Minstrel S modems to try and drum up business, but what about us poor Mac users? Their FAQ states that they don't support Mac. Dare I say, this is damn near discrimination. =)

Has anyone's credit card account received a credit back yet from Yada? I called Yada the same day the free modem promo debut about a week ago and changed my service plan from 6 months to 12 in order to receive a modem refund, and have yet to see a credit. Will they be crediting us back in free months?

VDX RF Optimization

Can anyone tell me how to check my VDX for "RF Optimization". I got it just under a year ago, and I'm guessing that I'm out of luck.

I am a Mac user and had no problems at all. In fact all I did was put the modem in and go, I didn't even need the my desktop computer. I think the only reason you need a desktop is to install the software and it is already installed on the modem or to use the My yadayada service which is like avantgo. The only thing I used the computer for was to install the Blazer browser. So you should be good to go no matter what type of computer you have.

You'll have to request an optimized Visor from Handspring. Handspring told me that they were not offering optimized Visors until recently. If you didn't request one, chances are you don't have an optimized one.

I got mine 2 days after I requested it from Handspring. I did notice from the back of the units that some of the hardware is rearranged. OS is still the same.

Handspring will ship you an optimized Visor for free! How awesome is that?

ANOTHER BLACK MARK ON YADA YADA

ANOTHER BLACK MARK ON YADA YADA ... the 1st one being that they don't (and WON'T) do Mac.
The 2nd one is you're only rated a PERSON if you have a credit card.
If you think I'm being too harsh, give them a call, and ask them the question ... and listen for the murmurs of contempt from their Customer Svc. personnel.

Well hang on just a sec. I know what I said earlier in this forum, but two new factors have arisen -

1) It seems that the only thing you would need your PC for with YY is to upload the YY Browser and Mail applications to the handheld. You can still use the service with third party browsers and mail clients, so say these other users.

2) The e-mail I received from YY customer service the other day suggests that they will be releasing a Mac beta "within a realistically short period of time". (I posted this in another thread) And since the Win version is also still a Beta, they'll be just about equal.

As for the no-credit card problem, well, you have my sympathy.

I was told that there would be no refund, but that the service would be free until the $150 is exhausted [i.e., free months].

But he's not bitter.

Smile

Am I a bit eager awaiting for packages containing optimized VDX's and Minstrel S Modems to arrive? I can't be home when they arrive, but I did set up one of my external security cameras to post images online of my front door area where all packages are placed by the delivery services. Now I can check at work to see if anything has arrived yet.

Of course I could just wait until I get home, but there's something neat about checking your front door from 30 miles away. Heh.

Regardless, I sent them an e-mail telling them how annoyed and disappointed with them I am. We'll see if they respond at all.

Strangely enough, I get the impression that the Minstrel worked a whole lot better on my non-optimized VDX. Which leads me to wonder - how can I tell if the unit Handspring sent me isn't just someone else's old VDX with a shiny new screen? How can I tell what makes an "optimized" VDX?

Well I noticed that mine was different in the back, if you have one of the ice backed models you can tell this. If you have the black that won't work.

I also see that the part number on the box does say "visor-deluxe-rf-blue"

YY Error

YY Lost my order somehow but made good on it. I was confirmed as a user, but apparently my order didn't go through for some reason. I submitted my order before the holiday break and never got a confirmation email. Came back to work, nothing.

The rep on the phone said there were some strange anomalies with the promo site and the PalmGear site and they have a fix list they are working on. My order is supposed to reach me by end of week. Hope so. I was initially hoping for a new toy for the New Year.

I guess it all turned out for the better anyway. I had more time for my hobbies and family instead of nerding out with the minstrel.

ECommerce is great, but it aint perfect yet.

To determine if you are running an optimized VDX, tap on the applications button, then hit the drop down menu and choose INFO. That will give you a listing of all programs on the Visor and there is an option there as well for the version of the OS. Optimized units are running OS 3.1H3.
