Unhappy still no luck

Thanks for the input knoppi, but still connect but no sync, surf or email. Did not get a chance to contact Linksys support - always tomorrow.

Lightbulb new idea to solve "Serial error 0x0302"

i have had this error for one or two times, even with dynamic ip. But after i disabled encryption over wep (in the router software settings), the modul connects without any problems. disable encryption even on the module.

10 minutes ago i enabled encryption and the module does not connect with dynamic ip but with static, but i could not surf with blazer nor use eudora.

ok, this couldnt be the final solution, but it works and my neighbours are still far away from my house, even they dont have a wireless lan.

p.s. xircom support says, http authentification is currently not supported!

Ok.. I want to clarify things.

1) you can ALWAYS get the module to connect. But you
can't get a TCP/IP stack established.
2) If you set it to AP, disable encryption, and hardcode info
in, you get a CONNECTED message. You cannot use TCP/IP apps.
(Try simple ones like PING, using ICMP, or telnet). The MAC addresses never get cached on either PCs or the AP.
3) you can ALWAYS get connected using a peer-to-peer configuration.
The problem is that this is useless if you want to use TCP apps.

4) I'll try the "Uncheck Query DNS" but still hardcode DNS.
If this works, however, I'll be shocked.

5) after you "Connect", go back into SpringPort,
Select "Status". Under "Advance Status", select "IP Information".

See if you have an IP and a Default Gateway AND a DNS server.
If you do, you should be working fine.
I NEVER see this when I use the Linksys, even If I hardcode info in.

Still no word from Xircom.

Angry

My IP status looks nearly the same as knoppi's except the apparently crucial DHCP server is 0.0.0.0 The lack of e-mail and surfing is annoying, but being unable to hotsync is really grating. Interestingly it seems that the network settings->preferences->details IP Address Automatic checkbox doesn't have an effect. Found that this box could be checked and the previously entered IP address would still appear in the IP status. Also found that the DNS primary and secondary do not appear when the connection is made from network settings, but they do appear when the connection is made from status.

It's gotten so bad I've resorted to RTFM (not that that takes too long) again. There were a couple of things I'd overlooked but they had no effect. Nice how they stuck in parenthesis the bit about leaving the Primary PC name blank for hotSync setup. Thought that my firewall was blocking the sync, but no. Also found that network sync'ing has to be allowed from the Palm Desktop software, but that also had no effect.

Kyp, when you talk with the Xircom'ers at the show, let them know that they could have put something (anything) in the printed documentation about the network settings->preferences->details section. Sure, it's in the help/tips section, but my memory isn't good enough to remember their suggestions (which haven't worked yet) long enough to enter them.

@ yodel_head
some more words about my compromise solution:

"IP Address Automatic checkbox doesn't have an effect. Found that this box could be checked and the previously entered IP address would still appear in the IP status."

set your visor to dynamic ip, infrastructure networking, encryption off!!, check your settings for the main pc and the ip of your main pc for hotsyncing. it should work. is the ip of your isp correct?

whats about your network? only wireless? or even physical with a hub etc.? check your router could work than as a bridge. is nat avtivated?

in the settings of the palm desktop enable only!!! network-sync, leave serial etc unchecked.

Oliver:

Dynamic IP never connects, always get the "Serial error 0x0302" Tried it with infrastructure and P2P, also tried it with encryption off and same results.

Network is 1 wired, 1 wireless. DHCP works fine for both of those. The router/wireless box has a logging capability, will next try turning that on to see if the log provides any clues.

Somehow the other evening I managed to get a log of the TCP/IP activity on the Visor, but cannot remember how to access it. Have you seen this? How can it be accessed?

Haven't tried turning of the Local/USB sync option yet.

Is yours a Linksys wireless? Sounds as if Kyp and I have the same Linksys models with the same problems.

Posted by knoppi on 06-23-2001 02:33 PM:

no, im using an apple airport basestation for wireless network to one airport mac and the visor, as a router and bridge (connected over an hub) to two non-airport macs and a win98 pc.

the general settings of the router (basestation) are:

disable encrypten over wep

internet: only the dns entry for my isp
get dynamic TCP/IP address over ppp.

networking: share tcp/ip, share one tcp/ip address over dhcp and nat, ethernet computer share one ip address over nat

disable dhcp!!

enable airport to ethernet bridging

i think there is an ip conflict.
the module get an internal ip from the router (10.x.x.x) for networking like the other pcs.
you dont need another ip for the internet, because you share the TCP/IP address - given to you dynamically from your isp- over nat (ethernet).

so there is no need to get another ip in the settings by checking dynamical ip. only the dns entry (on the visor and the router for internet access) must be the same!

I have been told that the Network Hotsync is only possible from an WIN/IBM type system.
A key step in doing the Hotsync is going on the PC in the same Hotsync menu where you choose to view the log, or select 'custom' settings for your conduits, and making sure that 'Network' is checked, as well as 'Local USB' or 'Local Serial' or whatever you use.

Smile

I had opened a case with Xircom when I had no luck getting it to work with my Linksys BEFW11S4. Xircom had gone so far as to order a unit to test with when lo and behold Linksys posted an update yesterday (July 9th). I installed the update and my Xircom card is now working perfectly with the Linksys. I've even tried 64 and 128 bit encryption without problems. The version of code that worked for me was: 1.37.9b dated Jun 21 2001.

I'm very happy now.

I got it working here as well. (My rather odd setup: peer-to-peer network 802.11 using Sygate for Internet sharing.) The trick was to put the server machine's IP in as gateway and to put the cable modem ISP's DNS servers in on the network settings. Works wonderfully now.

update?

where is this update?

Go to www.linksys.com, Service and Support (left side of the screen), Firmware Upgrades and then select your model from the pull down box. Or for the BEFW11S4 model that I have go here: ftp://ftp.linksys.com/pub/network/befw11s4_1379b.zip
