-- got the wireless Ethernet module today (http://discussion.visorcentral.com/vcforum/showthread.php?threadid=15053)

Posted by verge on 05-16-2001 09:07 PM:

It worked instantly! the speed is wonderful. It installs a copy of Blazer, and I was able to use all my Internet apps.

I think the range isn't as good as they claim. I had some problems connecting from parts of my office that are within 150 ft. of an Airport base station.

Now I'll have to get one for my home...this is really fun.

It's very tall, like the GPS modules, and even the Slipper Prism Visorphone case from E & B won;t close with the module in, but I don't care.

But... is it really worth the price?

Thumbs up

Great news. I, too, have had the same experience. Try accessing your e-mail, Hotsyncing, chatting with ICQ or AIM, etc. Anxious to hear your responses.

What are the power requirements for the module. Does it have battery's.

Posted by ethos on 05-16-2001 11:02 PM:

And more importantly would you consider reselling it for $199, since it is used!!!

Question troubles with the WLAN Springport

Got my "evaluation" copy today....trying to use it here at work with our Wireless LAN. Getting good signal strength, but the network type remains as "Generic AP" instead of our network name.

Can't browse with blazer, nor use MultiMail.

I've double-checked IP, DNS, SSID, multiple times.

Anyone else seen that "Generic AP" network type? Xircom's documentation is utterly useless.

Thanks.
Eric

I've got mine working with static IP addressing, and
'Generic AP' is what shows up with a D-Link access point.
I'm presuming that's what you'll see unless Xircom's APs
do some magic (which they may -- the module sends out a
non-IP packet before starting DHCP discovery, which may
be a Xircom-izm).

I've got some questions and comments.

The thing is expensive. The thing is huge.

Can you hotsync with it?

I definitely would like one of these, but I think I will wait for Gen 2.

Thumbs down Availability in Canada

I just got a reply from Xircom's Canadian distributor saying that the module is not available yet in Canada and there is no ETA. I am still waiting for an evaluation module.

Isn't the range of Airport limited to 150 ft.? I seem to remember that in my "useless facts" section of my brain from when it was released.

The AirPort base station is limited to 150ft. 802.11 is limited by the atenna size and whatever the base station is capable of. Some can transmit farther.

I got it working great in the Office (Using Lucent's AP with 128 bit encryption), but had problems at home (Using Linksys Cable Router + Wireless AP). Accoding to Linksys, the problem is the router itself and was told to replace it.
Will update on that..
You DO NOT have to set a static IP or anything like that like some people mentioned.
You CAN do wireless synching (And it works quite fast, faster than USB sync, IMHO, especially with BackupBuddy).
Blazer comes preinstalled, but does not work too fast, since it still connects to the Handspring Proxying server.
Blazer is fine with my VisorPhone, but not worth it on the ethernet wireless module, unless you need the WAP or the 128bit encryption (which is why I still use it ;-)
AIM works great, and for webbrowsing I have been using Avantgo wireless and Blazer sometimes, but mostly EudoraWeb.
EudoraWeb Works extremely FAST, but no graphic support
(although it does have color font support).
PalmVNC is cool to show off, but even with server side scaling is not worth using unless on an emergency situation.
Speed is much better with 1.40 compared to 1.31, but the limitation is the client itself, I'm sorry to state. It's just impossible to see what you are doing on a realtime basis.
Telnet 0.9 works ok, especially if I use fonthack.
It also works with the Think Outside Keyboard, btw..
As a PQA browser, using the JP Systems browser is great!
I am having problems with Silverscreen and launching PQAs directly, but that's not too big of a deal.

I really haven't done too much e-mail through it yet (Mainly cause I have a RIM) so can't comment on it too much, except I'm sure is much faster. Will post on this as well.

The following are the major problems:
1) I have a visorphone, and use that as my main cellphone, so I constantly have to keep on switching the modules.
Waiting for that external device to use my VisorPhone!
2) I don't know if this is me or not, but sometimes the encryption key gets lost. A Pain to reenter the key. Had to do this like 10 times first day, haven't had to since.
3) Much like the yadayada and Omnisky, you have to MAKE SURE YOU DISCONNECT before pulling out the module.
(Not
doing this has caused locking of the device, which the only solution is wiping out the device. Problem for me since I have a 16MB PRism so my backup module is useless.
It took me a while to get it back to normal and now starting REUSING BackupBuddy.)
The following are the major benefits:
1) be able to hotsync on a meeting w/o having to go back to my desk.
2) be able to administrate all UNIX machines from anywhere via telnet (I haven't tried an SSH client, mainly because last SSH client I tried did not work with my keyboard)
3) be able to browse internal websites for monitoring (i.e. BigBrother) from anywhere
4) be able to control all Machines on emergencies (Via PalmVNC) (PS: Does anyone know if there is a server side scaling VNC server for UNIX (Solaris and Linux really) ?)

So in summary:
It's worth it if you have a busy schedule and a wireless network at the job.
If I get it working with the new Linksys router, it's worth it since I can do TCP/IP stuff from my couch on the living room while watching the baby.
It's a pain if you have a "crucial" module i.e. VisorPhone or other..
It's NOT worth it if you only want to do web browsing and PalmVNC.

Will get back to you on:
LinkSys router.
E-mail client.
SSH client with Keyboard Support.

Peer-to-Peer?

Anyone using one of these on a peer-to-peer network without an access point?

I have the module configured and seeing the network. It will do a "modem sync" with AvantGo, but neither Blazer or Multimail will see the network. I don't know if it needs to be told what the DNS servers are or what. (And would the DNS be my host computer or the cable modem's DNS servers?)

Anyone who has a setup like this running, I'd appreciate any tips!

This is on a Windows Me system running Sygate for internet sharing over 802.11b. The network works fine for the laptop and second desktop on the net.

Thumbs down same problems

like dennya.

i can connect while a hot sync to the internet to get contents like avantgo.

but when i try to send an email with eudora or multimail timeout errors occured.
avantgo gives a 5494 error message, unknown network error.

like someone before i have either a generic ip.

i am using an airport network with one win98 pc. the module is not able to "see" the macs, only the win pc.

even the ip addressing is obscure. everytime i am logging in the network, another ip. the settings on the module are static ip!

my basestation is configured as a router, gateway 10.0.1.1, ip the same. xircom support is mure than useless. hope somebady here has a wonderful idea.

trouble with linksys cable router/wap also

Like Kyp, I too have had a bad experience connection to a linsys cable router/wap. Automatic IP always gives "Serial error 0x0302", and fixed IP connects but cannot sync, browse or email. Also like Kyp, I've entered the doggone wep password so many times thinking that was the issue, but to no avail. Ditto all the comments about the worthless Xircom manual. Contacted Xircom support about the problem and they stated:

Thank you for making Xircom part of your communication solution. We are currently investigating a DCHP issue with our adapter and some base stations. This issue has been escalated. At this time there is no solution. We are not sure if it is us or the base station or both. That is yet to be determine. Please keep checking our web page for any updates and developments.

Concerning Kyp's comment:

Accoding to Linksys, the problem is the router itself and was told to replace it.

Did Linksys tell you to replace the router, or was it Xircom?

Kyp: Email me to compare notes/variations to see if there is some permutation/combination I've missed.

Thanks.

Follow up on Xircom module

Ok. I have an open ticket with Xircom support.
The trick is to act like it is an ethernet card for a laptop.
Then they'll pass you to the right people.
According to Xircom:

We had tested with two of the LinkSys AP here. One worked fine but the other would not issue IP to SWE at all. At this point, it is still under investigation to determine whether it is our module or the LinkSys AP issue.

Since my AP worked with a lucent card, I'm assuming is working.
I have to try again with a Cisco card (If you look at the Xircom module, it says "Wireless by Cisco"). Maybe is a Cisco thing?
anyway, I heard that Xircom didn't really stick with the 802.11b standards when it came to getting it's initial IP assigned (I don't know if its their implementation of bootp or dhcp or whatever).

The Xircom guy also told me that it was kind of useless to use
the card as a peer-to-peer other than if you have another device and
you have your own apps. I guess this meant writing your own applicatoins that do not use TCP/IP...

I will be going to PC Expo and Xircom is there so I'm really going to drill them.

As per Linksys, they did tell me that some of their APs were defective so they suggested to exchange it. I did. Still didn't solve the issue. LInksys doesn't have customer support on weekends which is when I'm home so I'm stuck without their help for now..

Xircom swe

Thanks for the info Kyp. I also think that my AP is working properly, albeit with a linksys wireless card. Maybe I'll try Linksys tech support tonight and see if there's any information to be gathered from them.

Thumbs up think i got it

you have to uncheck the boxes query dns and dynamic ip in the menue -> network preferences/direct seriell.

enter the dns from your isp and leave the ip address blank.

with this settings i can use blazer and eudora or proximail, not multimail!!! even avantgo has still problems, i hope to solve later this evening.

hope it helps.

avantgo says to use this settings:

On your desktop, please click on the Apple Icon and scroll down the list
till you see Control Panels. Select Control Panels and click on
"AvantGo Connect". In the AvantGo Connect window, highlight the AvantGo
Server and click on the Remove button. Repeat if there is another
server listed. Then click on the Add button and enter the following
information:

Hostname: 64.157.224.7
Port: 443
Username: (your username)
Click on Set Password. Enter your AvantGo password.
Make sure the "Connect to this server during device synchronization" and
"Refresh all content at next sync" boxes are both checked. Click ok.
Make sure this matches your devices Mobile Link.

Once these are entered, try syncing again. If you receive updated
content on your device please try the wireless connection once more.
