-- Omnisky revision c (http://discussion.visorcentral.com/vcforum/showthread.php?threadid=13735)

Omniksy released revision c for the springport minstril modem.

It works great. To me at least, I noticed a faster connection and less errors.

Maybe I'll actually keep omnisky now

How new is it?

Is this really a new rev. or the one that's been around for awhile? I believe that when I updated a month or so ago it was supposed to be rev. C but the modem actually says rev. B. Has anyone else installed the previous flash updater and also this one?

I installed it and it says revision c. It works rather well. Still some bugs (ie: pulling modem out while unit is on). But either the initial connection/account login is fsater or I'm imagining things.

I also noticed a definite improvement. The modem connects more quickly, and downloads run faster and more smoothly with fewer hangs. Definitly worth downloading.

BTW, how did you know there was an update, and how long has it been there? Omnisky doesn't seem to send notifications of updates, nor do they even to bother to date their web pages. Thanks for mentioning it. If it hadn't been for your post, I never would have know it was available.

I check Omniskys website frequently since I was initially unhappy with the Minstral on my Prism. I was PRAYING for an update to stop the reset errors which wipes out my data.

I dont get any updates from omnisky except marketing emails which isn't worth much to me personally. But I just happened on revision C and flashed my modem. Its only been out for about a week or two from what I remember.

Glad to hear it works out good for you. Maybe the next patch will elimiate serial errors and memory erros completely

Thumbs down Omnisky Rev C - Getting Worse

When I first got my Omnisky modem things worked great. I used it constantly and did not seem to have all those serial errors. The biggest problem I had was pulling the thing out with it still connected and getting a hard reset. It took a few but I finally got into the habit and I would say I could go month without problems. Then I installed Rev B and sure enough I started to get the serial errors. Now I would get NetLib and Fatal Errors but still no hard resets and it was about every few weeks. Then I installed Rev C and that did it. I get serial errors evertime. I also get Fatal errors everyting I shut it down from Minstrel. I called Omnisky and they sent me new modem. I had to update it to Rev C but no difference. I get serial errors everytime. I get Fata Errors and the infamous NetLib erros. I just wiped out all my data and started with a clean slate and still the same problems. And as I think about it this all started after I began to use backup, flash and GPS modules. I wonder if one of those has corrupted the springboard. Well off to call Handspring and Omnisky.

BTW. For me turning off the visor and unplugging the module seem to be a waste since it turns my visor back on. I found that if I unplug the modem (after shutting it down) and unplugged it, it would work fine (of course this was before all the problems began).

What's after Rev C.?

According to the various press releases a few weeks ago, after Rev C will be the incorporation of Blazer into OmniSky, thus giving us a stable color interface. Anyone know the timetable for this?

Don't know the timetable but until they get me a stable Rev C I don't believe it. (Go to the "Where's all the *****n'... thread and read about the problems some of us are having with Rev C if you are interested).

Talking Blazer

I'm not sure when Blazer will be out but I was told it will go into beta sometime around June. I don't want to wait so I purchased blazer today from the Handspring site. It went on sale today 5-15-2001 for 19.99 I installed it a bit ago and tested it and I have to say I am in love with this browser it works fantastic and blows every other browser away.

I agree with you. I can't wait for omnisky to release their version of blazer, So I bought blazer yesterday night.

Blazer and bookmarks

I bought it today, too (I had been using the Beta version b2). It would be nice if I could find an easy way to copy my Omnisky bookmarks to Blazer. Anyone have any thoughts?

FYI, tomorrow my samsung antenna that works in the Minstrel comes via UPS. I'll be interested to see how it affects signal strength. I had also once bought one of those little black and gold "signal strength enhancers" for my cell phone from Gadgetuniverse.com, but it didn't make any noticeable difference. Anyone tried it with Omnisky, or have any opinion on this?

Several of us have. See this thread

for more info.

I've read (and posted) in that thread. I only see posts about the Samsung antenna, not about this supposed "signal strength enhancer" that adheres to the back of the phone (or, potentially, the Minstrel). Anyone have any experience with one of those?
