Ok, after reading many articles on VC and other Visor sites, I think i'm going to go ahead and buy a Motorola Talkabout 8167 from Sprint and get service with the Wireless Web option enabled. Now it's my understanding that once I have this and the cable from cables4pdas.com I should be able to surf the web, read email, and possible some Aol instant messager. Would anybody like to point out anything I'm missing in there? I don't really wnat to shell out a few hundred bucks just to find out I need to get another phone/cable/cell provider. It would be especially helpful if somebody could verify for me that the Talkabout 8167 is data compatible (has the modem and all that fun stuff).

I have a talkabout 8160 and it is browser compatible so I bet the 8167 is also. The only thing that questions me is on the cables website they say the cables will work on the 8167, but don't mention the 8160. Has anyone used a cable to get internet via the 8160 and a visor deluxe?

Before you go out and buy something, you should at least take a look at the VisorPhone. I've had mine for just about a week now, and it works great for both voice and data. I was able to get rid of one device on my belt, and I don't have to carry cables.

Visorphone

I have looked into the visorphone, one problem though. It's $300, and for $300 i'd buy the minstrel s. And it's GSM. I live in California so the only GSM provider for me is cingular and with cingular you need an extra $5 per month fee just to be able to access data plus another $.15 per min charge. Sprint does not charge this $.15 cent thing and you only use your regular minutes.

I agree. I am waiting until Sprint offers the VisorPhone. (The price structure for Cingular is way too steep).

Any Idea when that's supposed to come out? If it's coming out in the next month that would be perfect for me. But if not for awhile I'll go ahead at get the Talkabout and get the cdma version of the visorphone later.

StarTAC celluar cables

The Motorola StarTAC, TimePort and Talkabout CDMA phones work perfectly with the Visor. You just need a cable and some email or web browsing software.

startac-talkabout-timeport differences

OK, it seems this motorola/sprint solution looks good. But can any one comment on the differences in the motorola phone models? I know I need the CDMA versions, but what do you get for the extra dollars for talkabout and timeport over the startac 78xx series?

Thanks for the motorola links. I had looked at them before and could not find much significant difference in the models, other than cosmetics. I bought the Startac 7867 today at CompUSA for $49.99 (149 - 100 CompUSA rebate), so as soon as I get my cable, it's wireless web here I come!

On a side note, you can read about the upcoming SprintPCS 3G CDMA2000 migration plans. The new, higher speed data access and improved voice technology should start to appear by the end of this year.

Another Cable Vendor

www.gomadic.com has the visor/startac cables for $28. this is the cheapest I've seen.

Wireless web service

If you are on the Sprint or Verizon network you must have them activate the Wireless Web portion of your service. This enables you to use your cellphone for data calls which are billed the same way as voice calls.

Once you have Wireless Web enabled you can continue to use your current ISP or you can use Verizon or Sprint's Quick Network Connection (QNC) method which is free. This QNC allows users to access the web through sprints servers which are always online, much like DSL. This allows you to get online in about 10 seconds.

We include these QNC instuctions with each cellular data cable we sell.

Verizon mobile office

It was stated above that you have to pay extra for Verizon's connection to the internet. You only need to pay extra if you want to use the phone by itself to surf the web (Mobile Web Service) on a web enabled phone.

If you are using your Visor and a cable to connect to a data enabled cell phone, you can use Verizon's (Mobile Office Service) to surf the web, access your ISP, etc. You do NOT have to notify Verizon nor is there any additional charge to use this service over and above the standard air time connection fee or minutes used.

Verizon, I didn't need Wireless Web

I am a Verizon subscriber, use a Timeport cell phone and didn't need them to activate Wireless Web services. Seems like you only need that if you're going to use your cellphone to web browse which would be a pain to do.

Go to http://www.verizonwireless.com/inte...fice/index.html and see the requirements for Mobile Office, which automatically comes with Verizon digital service.

Along with a cable from http://www.cables4pdas.com and my Visor Platinum I can connect via either qnc or via my ISP w/o problems at 14.4Kbps.

My recommendations for cables are: If you want to hold the Visor in hand and clip your cellphone somewhere away from it get their 24" cable. I bought the 18" cable and it seems just a bit short to clip my cellphone onto my visor (car sunshade visor that is) and reach to my HSVP in my hand. Otherwise the easiest way to use it is to just hold the cellphone on the back of the Handspring Visor in your hand all together.

Which visor model?

Which Visor model do you have? The Visor Solo and Deluxe use OS3.1 which may or may not work. Go to this website for set-up instructions.
