Earthlink/Omnisky users?

With Omnisky's key technology assets now at Earthlink's disposal, has anyone here subscribed or is thinking about subscribing to their service? I saw a Minstrel S CDPD modem (for the Handspring Visor Platinum) at a local Office Depot for a 'priced-to-clear' $60, originally $200.

I've been an omnisky user for about nine months and I was wondering if I was going to re-subscribe when my contract ran out. After downloading the new Earthlink software today I may just go ahead and do it. The software is all color now and looks great. Omnisky had been promising that since before I signed up but they never delivered. As for the service itself it still works very well, I've had little to no trouble with it.

omnisky

My brother gave me his modem at the same time Earthlink took over. I waited for the dust to settle (and hopfully the price to drop) but it looks like Earthlink is charging more. Now I'm not sure it's worth the $'s. Anybody have any feed back? How useful is it ? I don't travel much but the coverage isn't the greatest which is one of the reasons I would subscribe.

Angry Earthlink/Omnisky

I would suggest to look elsewhere. I've been with both Earthlink and Omnisky for years. (Omniksy since they began with the Visor.)
I struggled with early Omnisky issues and was always able to get Tech Support and help. This has changed with Earthlink to at least a 60 minute wait the two times I tried to contact them. I did leave two e-mails and only got one response in the promised 24 hours.

I had to download the app several times, install and uninstall three times to get this to work pretty good most of the time.
I've had to do two hard resets since the install and lock-ups while browsing/getting e-mail.

With the new Earthlink browser/E-mail/Buddy set-up none of it works as well as Omnisky did, although it looks pretty and uses Blazer which I remember Omnisky buying into somehow. Since getting it installed I've found the E-mail client really "dumbersome" and most disappointly I can't use my PQA's. The Start page which I used for news, stocks etc. is gone also.

Now I can't access one site and have to wait for the others to load rather than the easy pqa's that Omnisky supported.
I'll probably be dumping both.

I have to agree, when I realized that I lost my pqa's I figured it was all over. I also found out the hard way that putting the springboard into my prism no longer reloads the "omnisky" software, it now has to be installed via a hot-sync. Earthlink looks nice but it's not as useful as OS was.

Question Earthlink working with PQAs...

Just thought I'd share this little tid-bit regarding the
Earthlink/Omnisky service and PQAs.

I recently acquired a Minstrel S CDPD modem ($60 clearance from
Office Depot) for my Handspring Visor Platinum. Wanting to give
ELN/Omnisky a whirl, I subscribed to the service. As usual, I
downloaded the ELN software, followed the instructions to flash-
update the modem, and voila all was working. Everything except all
my PQA's, of course. I'm sure everyone's experienced this problem in
addition to all the work-arounds, i.e. upgrade to Palm OS v4.1, etc. Not
wanting to part with my PQAs, I decided to UNinstall the ELN software
and reload my WCA applications once again and move on with my
VisorPhone dialup connection to Earthlink. Note that I haven't
unsubscribed to the ELN/Omnisky network (6-month locked-in period,
yuk!).

Well, tonight I noticed that my Prefs->Network still contained the
settings for the Minstrel modem. On an after-thought, I decided to
just pop-in the modem and launch a PQA. The worst that could happen
was my VPL would crash and a customary reset would be involved. Lo
and behold, I was able to use all of my PQAs, Blazer v2.0 and my
email client, mMail without any problems!

Has anyone else tried this, or am I just so new that everyone has
already known and, as always, I'm the last to know?

I use PQAs all the time on Treo

I use JP Systems SureWave browser (free download) and all the PQAs I want just via regular dial up. I think you guys should be able to do the same with the ELN/OmniSky modem.

Thumbs up ELN/Minstrel S Modem = Great Service

I wanted to comment how pleased i am with my current service with ELN & Minstrel S modem. I just purchased my Omnisky modem from Ebay last week and have been surfing flawlessly for the past 6-7 days. What a fantastic experience this is.
I'm happy to report that i had no problems loading on Earthlinks software. Reading past replys i was concerned i was going to be in for it. But no probs! I only wish i could delet Omnisky's old software, but unfortunately its in ROM on the modem. Oh well, whats another couple of apps.

Another plus is i totally dig the case that was included with the Omnisky modem! I use my Edge w/Minstrel S and it fits absolutely perfect. My only complaint with this is i wish my visorphone would have included a similar carrying case.
