I saw that the Thinmodem is upgradeable to a 56K modem. Has that upgrade been released? Does it give the Thinmodem the same capability as the Thinmodem+ ?

Other than the 8MB of memory, what would be the difference between the Thinmodem with upgrade and the Thinmodem+?

The update has been released and makes the Thinmodem (non Plus) functionally equivalent to the Plus version (sans the memory) Both work very well. You can get the update by going to the support page on the CardAccess web site. I just recently bought the ThinmodemPlus (shortly after upgrading my Thinmodem to 56K) to get the extra memory. I would highly recommend either one.

The original ThinModem is a 33.6 K modem. The upgrade increases this to 56K/V.90 and is available here . In addition to updating the speed at which the modem connedts, the real time modem status program is updated. The update also contains Browse-It 2.0 and One Touch email. (The original ThinModem came with Browse-It 1.0 and a demo version of MultiMail Pro.)

After the update the only difference should be the memory.

That's great! Thanks for the replies. I am justlooking for a modem for occasional use, and am trying to decide between the Xircom Springport and the Thinmodem.

The Xircom has a $30 rebate until the end of the month, and so I could probably snag that one for $63 plus shipping (after rebate). The Thinmodem has a $30 rebate at PalmGear, so that would be $89 (plus shipping). Any advice?

Some have argued for the ThinModem for "occasional use" in that it runs off of your Visor's batteries as opposed to requiring an additional power source. You won't pull it out and insert it only to find that the batteries have died since the last time you used it. See this thread .

The size is great (I leave my ThinModem Plus in at all times) but this is less of an issue if it is only something that you are going to use occasionally.

I got my ThinModem Plus for the extra memory. I use the modem component only when I travel on business. It has worked very well for me and I have been very happy with it.

Thanks all for the great advice! I just snagged one off eBay so I should be surfing with my VPL soon!! (Thank goodness for rechargeable batteries....)

One last question - does anyone here use Earthlink ISP with the Thinmodem?
