-- HELP: Windows 2000 & USB (http://discussion.visorcentral.com/vcforum/showthread.php?threadid=2819)
So I've connected a USB cradle to my Win2000 PC here at the office. Downloaded the updated software from HS, uninstalled the old software, and installed the new.
When I put the Visor in the cradle and press the HotSync button, Win2000 tells me "New Hardware Found: Handspring Visor." But then, it wants to know where it can find the drivers for the Visor...what drivers? What does it need? I've tried pointing it to the install CDROM, and also to the folder on my hard drive where the software is installed.
No luck -- I can't get past the "that location does not contain information about your hardware" error message. If I choose to not install a driver, and leave the Visor as an Unknown Device, HotSync doesn't work.
I know that I didn't have this much trouble getting the USB cradle to work on my home Win98 machine...any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. HS tech support was pretty useless....

There are some W2K specific instructions at the Handspring Update site (I think this link will fail because you need to enter your serial number. If so, go here first). They describe how to uninstall/reinstall the USB drivers. You might want to give this a try.

Mark--
Thanks. Unfortunately, I've already followed those directions, to no avail.

Eric,
Sounds like it's looking for your Win2K CD, not the visor/palm software. Try putting your Win2K CD in your drive and then pointing to the CD drive when that message comes up.
Hope this helps.

Have Visor Will Travel!
Craig--
Thanks for the suggestion. I was optimistic that it would work, since I hadn't thought about pointing it to the Win2K CD. Unfortunately, it didn't like that either.
What am I missing here? I know some of you out there must be using USB cradles with Win 2000 -- am I the only one with this frustrating problem? For the rest of you, did it even ask for a driver for the Visor???
Very confusedly,
Eric

I had to perform one additional step on my Win2k/USB configuration.
After following the instructions given by Handspring, when I performed the post-new-update sync, I opted to choose which driver to use instead of letting Win2K use the "recommended" driver. I believe I selected the Visor driver that had "(USB)" as part of its description.
And then, after it finished installing, I rebooted.
Thanks for all the helpful suggestions. The cradle is finally working!
Handspring tech support suggested that I unplug the cradle, uninstall software, reboot, reinstall software, turn off computer, reconnect cradle, reboot, and then try to HotSync.
To my utter amazement, it works! I now know the joy of combining my peppy Internet access here at the office with the improved speed of the USB cradle. Those AvantGo pages just fly onto the Visor!!!
Again, thanks for all your help. Visor owners are so nice!
Eric
