-- Refreshing "feature" on visorcentral (http://discussion.visorcentral.com/vcforum/showthread.php?threadid=16000)

Thumbs down

Hi VisorCentral!

I'm using your site a lot, and I really think it has great usability.

However, there is one "feature", that I don't like. Almost all pages contain the HTML code
<meta http-equiv="refresh" content="300">
which causes the page to reload every five minutes.

This has IMHO absolutely no sense. Some might say they want to keep up to date, and have the front page reload often. I think however that it should be left to the user to ask his browser to do this.

The reloading causes two "problems" for me:
1. Waste of bandwidth.
2. When I disconnect from the Internet, but still have windows with Visorcentral news and articles open, I continue to get "Server cannot be found" messages every 5 minutes.

I hope, I will be possible to have removed this tag, in the new Visorcentral v. 3.

Keep up the good work with your site. It's great!

Regards... Niels

BTW: I'm using the browser Opera 5.10. (Very recommended. Get it at www.opera.com)

I'll let Marcus know. That setting is good for news pages but not for the forum.

Also bad on news pages

Thanks.

My point, however, was that it also would be better to avoid the refresh-tag on the article pages (like http://www.visorcentral.com/page/0-4-89-1-4.htm). A page like this is very unlikely to be updated within 5 minutes (in fact not even within days), and as such there is no reason to refresh it.

Keep up the good work on your site.

Regards... Niels

A lot of sites do that to increase ad impressions and/or to randomly rotate ads.

Still don't like it though

Thanks, I didn't know that. Still remains that I don't like it. However, the knowledge that this "feature" might help to finance the content on the site, makes it a bit less anoying to me.

I'd have to agree that the refreshes are getting annoying... I noticed it a lot when trying to view the VisorAdventure pages. I'd be reading part way through the page, turn away for a minute, and when I'd come back the browser would be scrolled to the top of the page! Then I'd have to scroll back down to where I was and hope I finished in a couple minutes.

Also this seems to cause a problem with the Search VisorCentral page (not the discussion search). If i get the search results page and let it sit for a few minutes, it refreshes itself and loses all the search results. I have to click the back button in the browser and resubmit the search.

Any likelihood of turning this off?

Brian

Similarily, the auto-forward feature after creating a post does not work with Opera 3.62 for BeOS running version 2.0.3 of vBulletin's software. It does work with the Net Posotive browser. The auto-forward feature DOES work with Opera on vBulletin site running version 2.0.0.
