-- Same Minstrel Modem, Different provider (http://discussion.visorcentral.com/vcforum/showthread.php?threadid=10139)
Does anybody know if you can use a different service provider using a Minstrel S Wireless Modem from Yada Yada? Im getting pretty good service from Yada Yada but I was just curious to know if its possible.
So far it can be used on OmniSky and GoAmerica in addition to Yada Yada. I'm sure you would have to get their software to load on it.

Thanks for the info Rick.
Out off curiosity I called Omnisky to find out if I can use their service with a Minstrel S modem I purchased from Yada Yada. The Omnisky rep said this was impossible due to the fact that you cannot delete the Yada software on the modem because its write protected and you can't prevent yada's software from loading when you insert the modem. He suggested buying a modem from Omnisky. It seems to be true that I cant delete the Yada software thats came loaded already on the modem when I purchased it. But I hate to think that if we start getting crappy service from our service provider that well be stuck with them unless we buy another modem.

OSKY BS?
I think omnisky is wrong, the only software on the modem that matters is the minstrel program, you can go into that program and delete all the network settings, and thus make your modem useless. So you should be able to set it to another provider. I know of someone that was an omnisky beta tester and is now using verizon wireless. At some point I will most likely dump yadayada for a smaller plan from verizon or at&t.
The OmniSky module has the following apps:

I do NOT look wierd! I just look ... "different".
The Yada Yada comes preinstalled with 4 big programs :
Yada, a replacement app launcher which crashs a lot and is too slow for my tastes,.
Yada Broswer, which is yet another version of ProxiWeb/Broswe-it, which is also too slow and crashs to much for my tastes (compared with Blazer).
Email: a Yada Yada version of One-Touch Mail (I think), which is (i think) better then Multi-Mail Pro
There is also the typical subjects for any Minstel modem :Minstrel (a status/config program) and Power Switch (a power switch for the modem)
Then there's the typical Springboard apps -> Card Welcome (called YadaCW in the app launcher) and File Move.
You can transfer any program from the Minstrel to the Visor, including YadaCW. You can't delete YadaCW from the launcher, even if it's in the RAM of the Visor. File Mover, however, will happly delete it from the RAM. (I didn't try it on the Minstrel)
I moved a copy of the Email program to the RAM because I like it so much, so I can use it with my thinmodem.

Have you looked at the smaller plans from AT&T or verizon? If you do any kind of traveling, you'll get reamed with the six-cent-per-minute billing outside of their very small in-network area. AT&T's prices, from what I've seen, don't even come close. Maybe I'm looking in the wrong place?
As much as I complain about YYs customer service and their one-horse operation, I'll stick with them as long as no-one else offers a $29.95 unlimited package, or until they go broke.
