-- VisorPhone keypad: the height of absurdity (http://discussion.visorcentral.com/vcforum/showthread.php?threadid=15690)

I put a call into Kensington. They said the keypad will be available the beginning of the 4th quarter (september) and has a manufacturer's suggested price of $179.95.

I would love to see this in action, but that price will make me think twice. It's great that the VP has come down in price, but the expandibility is gonna get you!

Exclamation not worth the price

I liked the idea and would buy it at a more reasonable price ($50). Between it and the phone 179 + 299 that is way to much when there are throw away cell phones. I realize the phone is now down to $50, which has to have way more technology than the keypad. So 179 is out of the ball park.

Personally, I'd take that price with a grain of salt (well, probably a bit more than that) until Kensingtion actually announces something.

At $179, you're almost better off buying a separate Visor(~$100-150) just to use with the Visorphone!

Or a separate phone to use the SIM Card that came with the Visor-phone.
If the cost was even close to reasonable it would be something to consider. Granted, it is not for everyone. There are people in this world that think cars are an unnecessary item and live just fine without them. I'm not such a person. I like my car and all my other toys too. I got a VisorPhone to use the power of my Visor with a cell phone. I also have a GPS for my Visor (Geode and that's a long story). I enjoy my GPS and use it while traveling. I can see having the keypad in the glove box. Then while using my GPS I plug in the keypad to use the phone. When I get where I'm going, put the keypad and GPS in the glove box, and away I go Visor Phone on hip. But at $179, no thanks that's just too much. For much less money I could pick up a prepaid cell phone and just put it in the glove box.

Solution

Easy solution: Buy a sprint PCS phone with VOice command. Export your entire Outlook address book to the VoiceComand site, and you have instant acces to all of your contacts. No visor phone required. I was all about the visor phone when it came out, but even the $49 price tag won't get me to switch. i simply get twice the minutes, web access, voice command, etc etc for less money per month than GSM service.

Not aware of this feature, could you elaborate a bit?

Where would I store the Outlook address book? And how do I access that site?

Having all the numbers available is the biggest reason to go with VisorPhone, but if I can export all the numbers to my SprintPCS service, that changes a lot!

Thanks in advance

Has anyone else even tried to contact Kensington to see if this price is accurate?

Posted by PDACPA on 07-19-2001 02:57 PM:

Toby do u work for Kensington?

You keep defending them, we are just discussing the rumored price in hopes that they are listening and will consider our comment prior to actually pricing the product.

No. If anything, I'm defending the concept of finding out information for oneself before lambasting a company over a rumored price posted by someone with no previous posting history and no supporting evidence of their claim.

Well, if you guys want to potentially waste a lot of time discussing that, I'll butt out and let you have at it.

Well, the new guy must be extremely special then to get such a response from Kensington. Their response to me was that the "VisorPhone and Phone Keypad are new items that will be officially launched late summer. We currently have no product information available." This was in response to the following inquiry: "I am inquiring to see if there is any estimated pricing available for the VisorPhone keypad (Part # 31995) expected to be released this summer. There is a rumor going around one of the web boards that it's to be priced at $179.95. Is this accurate?".

Reply to Rjuhl

Hey Rjuhl,
VoiceCommand is one of those services that slips by most customers. It's kind of low-profile like that...I only stumbled across it because it is included in Sprint's new "Total Digital Connection" packages.
What it does: Gives you voice-activated access to all of your contacts, even if they have multiple phone numbers.

How it knows their phone numbers: You export your entire Outlook address book. You can also use your palm desktop, or even enter data by hand.

How it recognizes your voice: Instead of the old-school :Listen-and-match the closest command that you pre-recorded over and over, Voice Command digitizes you voice, and has a phonetic library that allows it to match your voice to text in its database (pretty cool). The result is that my girlfriend can use MY voicecommand account with 100% accuracy. It is not dependent on your voice alone.

I think you can store up to 2500 numbers or something crazy like that.

How do you use it: You simply grab your phone, punch *2, wait for the tone, and say "Call Mom at home", or "Call mom on the mobile" or "Call mom at work", or simply "Call mom" (it will dial the default number). It works really well, once you know the commands that it understands and doesn't understand, and learn to stick to them (not that hard). It saves a ton of time from scrolling through the address book, trust me.

Where do you get it: On the Sprint PCS site, I believe it is an option for something like 6.99 a month (don't quote me on that). It may or may not be worth that to you, but if you need lots of minutes, already use wireless web, want free long distance, and the whole 9 yards, upgrade to a Total Digital COnnection. That's what I did.

Adding entries: You can check out the page for adding entries at www.talk.sprintpcs.com

Hope that helps
Dan
(after re-reading this, it sounds like I work for Sprint. I don't!)

I am special!

I wrote their on-line division who gave me the number to the off-line sales division: 800-235-6708. They even returned my call when they could not immediately give me an answer! The return number was 800-820-6220.

I was waiting for this to come out to get the phone but now I can't wait. The keypad may come out at that price but should drop within a month or so.

Damn, I can't believe Kensington didn't check VisorCentral first before giving info to someone with less than 900 posts. Some people have been here a long time, lctaynton registered in Dec 2000, and just because we don't make a lot of posts doesn't mean we are the "new guy". Why don't you chill.

You obviously missed the point.

Some people have been here a long time, lctaynton registered in Dec 2000, and just because we don't make a lot of posts doesn't mean we are the "new guy".

It was a joking reference because he had never posted before and hence there was no base of experience to tell how reliable his information was. Also, just because someone is registered doesn't mean they've ever even come to the discussion board before (there have been contests which require one to register, after all, hey, whattayaknow, there was one in Dec. 2000 that drew a lot of attention). There's really no conclusive way to tell either way.

Why don't you chill.

I'm not heated. I never said his information wasn't or couldn't be correct. I only said that it might be a good idea to verify it before getting too bent out of shape over it. So far, no one has been able to, or bothered to try. I guess that I'll find out if I have the time when I get to work today.
