Discuss various issues with the SpringPort here...

Here is an e-mail I recevied from Paul:

Hi Marcus,

Since you started the 'SpringPort Wireless shipping' thread, thought I'd
send you my experiences so far:

I preordered it back in april, arrived today (May 16). German Ospina's
observations about it's physical characteristics are accurate. The module
uses a built-in Li-Ion battery which is supposed to work for 2 hours of use.

I've been having problems getting it to configure correctly as well. I can't
get it to provide an option to install a 128-bit encryption key in any of it's
profiles - the screens only show '40-bit' encryption. The packaging and the
label on the module, however, do say 128-bit.

Additionally, the labelling provides a MAC address for the module, yet when
I query the status throught the Xircom software, it shows a MAC address
of 00-00-00-00-00-00.

I've opened a service call with Xircom's technical support line, and while
the phone support guy knew about the modules existence, he hadn't worked on
one yet, and wasn't able to answer my questions. There may be the possibility
that I need to copy the software (using the FileMover) from the module to
the handheld to get it to work (from a hint someone the support guy was talking
to).

More as I learn things...

Angry

Ok..
SO I got it working and connecting to the Lucent Access point.
(It turns out that Lucent was using a 13 ASCII character
key, which equals 26 HEx. I had to translate the key to
HEX and it worked)

Was working beautifully. Instant messenger
working! Then CATASTROPHE!

My netlib got locked up. Had the same problem with the
yadayada module (But never with the visorphone).
So...I had to reboot...memory problems, so I had to
do a hard reset.

The problem? I have the 16MB upgrade and have no
16MB backup solution..so...lost pretty much everything..

The Speed itself is a bit slow...but I don't know if that's
due to the encryption (128bit) of the actual device...

Will try at home.
PS: PalmVNC was a bit slow, but was to a UNIX box...I
was going to try with the Server Side panneling..but that's when I crashed.

PS: If you have a prism, it charges with the cradle!

Smile Progress!

Ok, over the first hurdle.

Apparently, the configuration software for the wireless
module makes use of the serial communications hardware
and libraries.

I had installed the IrLib software to permit hotsync via
IR (on a Visor Deluxe), and had left the settings on the
"Serial/IR" preferences set to "Serial via Infrared".

Changing it back to "Serial via Cradle" has allowed me to
finish the configuration process, and make use of
encryption keys. Now I've just got to set up my laptop
to act as the other side of the link (I don't have an
access point here in the office).

So...I lost everything again...Again it locked up...
So now I am doing a hotsync to my machine and seing how
much it actually restores...I'm doing the hotsync
over the wireless module...kind of slow as well...
