-- Conflict between Yada Yada and Stowaway? (http://discussion.visorcentral.com/vcforum/showthread.php?threadid=10586)

Exclamation

Hi all,

I've got a Visor Platinum and the Minstrel S (through Yada Yada), as well as the Targus Stowaway keyboard. This combination seems to be giving my visor fits. With the latest driver off the targus site, I'm able to use the keyboard without the modem installed. I'm also able to insert the modem, then use the keyboard - once. If I try to remove the modem (and I've tried all manner of combinations of turning the modem off, switching apps, etc.) I get a Fatal Exception, followed by a soft reset. If I reinsert the modem, I immediately get a fatal exception/soft reset. After the reset, I get a fatal exception/soft reset - I have to do a warm reset and remove the keyboard driver to get back into my visor.

Does this ring any bells with anyone? YY has already told me that it's not their problem, as they didn't sell me the keyboard. I can't seem to get ahold of Targus' tech support. I'd appreciate anyone who can shed some light on the subject.

TIA,

Grant

Red face I got the same thing!

Same problem. I think it might have something to do with the Minstrel using certain inputs that the keyboard uses. It is ironic how If I shut the modem down, leaving it inserted, I can draft an email, then power it up and send it. I still get many fatal errors. I have found that I recieve these when I do the following:

1 Turn off/on the visor while the modem is running.
2 Powering down the modem 80% of the time.
3 When trying to type while modem is connected to ISP.
4 Then sometimes just out of the blue?

Must still be beta huh. Hope they can explain this and figure out a work around. Negates the practicality of having a keyboard.

Limited Workaround...

I experienced the fatal exceptions and hard resets also when inserting the Minstrel under various conditions. I now leave the Minstrel in all of the time - I am always browsing the web and checking email. I find that the keyboard will work for email on YadaYada if I turn the Prism power off and then back on while the modem is on with the email app. It is not always reliable as I have seen the keyboard work for a while with email and then stop when some slight change is made as in changing ISPs.

I would imagine that there are states that are not properly handled when switching between the keyboard app and YadaYada. It was frustrating at first but once I saw that it worked occasionally, I started mapping the email and keyboard interactions to work out a limited workaround. Turning Prism power off and on seems to handle most of the situations and that works for me until the software is rewritten.

I just finished playing around with the keyboard and Minstrel S. Insert the Minstrel into the slot first and wait for it to connect. Then, insert the Visor onto the keyboard. If the keys do not respond, go to the keyboard application and uncheck and then recheck the enable keyboard box. Go back to your email application and it should work. When you're done, shut down the Misntrel, go to the application launcher, remove the Visor from the keyboard, then remove the Minstrel. A lot to do, but it works every time for me. Hope it works for all of you!

Nope, doesn't work. As previously stated, I've tried every combination of keyboard and minstrel insertion and removal, all with no success. What version of the keyboard driver are you using? Did you get your modem through OS or YY?

I have a YadaYada modem (shouldn't matter because they are made by the same company) and version 1.2 of the keyboard driver. Did you try to go to the keyboard setup and disable and reenable the keyboard? That has worked for me.

Yep, tried that when I spoke to Targus' tech support. Not sure what else could be causing the fault, especially since our setups are so similar. Do you use YY's launcher, or Palm's? Do you use HackMaster, EVPlugBase, or nothing at all?

I've got a request in to Targus' tech support, and their stowaway guy (Dan) said he'd email me back when he had more info. I'll keep everyone posted...

I wouldn't narrow the Fatal Exceptions down to just the keyboard. I have a VDX and I swear for the life of me cannot find the rhyme or reason behind the Fatal Exceptions I get whenever I try to 'Disconnect' or undock the Springboard.

I have talked to numerour CS people at YY and they usually try the same methods... I am running out of solutions but I don't want to give this modem back. I even have the Optimized VDX...

I can honestly say I've never seen a fatal exception _of this type_ in any other situation, either on my old, unoptimized VDX or on my new VPL. If I remove the keyboard driver, the problem vanishes - I can pull the modem any way I like. I occasionally get shunted back to Palm's launcher rather than whatever 3rd party launcher I'm currently trying (SilverScreen at the moment - 1.8 is VERY nice), but other than that, the Minstrel driver code seems relatively benign...

I use LaunchEmIII, have many hacks(PopMe, McPhling, Afterburner, QuickHackV3.0, 3AlarmHack, MatrixHack, FindHack) running all at once with no problems. I just return to the LaunchEm screen before removing the modem and all is fine. I do have to go to the Keyboard app and disable and enable the keyboard everytime I use it with the modem. Not too big a deal.

I had the same problem - about 50% of the time, whether via "Shutdown" in the Minstrel app or the Power Switch, my Op VDX would crash. Same when I removed the module. YY did an advance exchange on the modem and I no longer have the problem. This modem doesn't have the YY launcher screen but instead has a Novatel screen. Also, instead of Yada Mail I have EudoraWeb and Eudora Mail 1.1 pre-installed - and now I can't use my Eudora 2.0 because the earlier version takes precedence and can't be deleted.

Question

Hmmm, that's interesting - I wonder if there's a way to get the Novatel software into the YY modem without doing an exchange? Thanks for the info - Ill follow up with YY and see what they think.
