-- VisorPhone - $49 for everyone! (http://discussion.visorcentral.com/vcforum/showthread.php?threadid=16891)

Posted by Tego on 07-16-2001 05:12 PM:

Yes, it should be possible to switch SIM cards between a normal phone and the Visor. But as noted yet, the price cut is not for 'free' VisorPhones. Only when bought with a service plan.

Also, again in Europe no price cut. OK, the VisorPhone just appeared on the shelves here about 2 months ago, but yet, It seems a little strange we have to pay about 400 US$ for one and in the US they pay 49 US$, especially considered they are developed in Europe, even in this tiny country I live in (Belgium).

Well, maybe we will see a price drop here too soon, otherwise it just isn't fair

My 2 cents

Thumbs up Am I the Only One Happy?

Great news about the price cut. I've already ordered my VisorPhone this morning, as soon as I saw the Buzz about the price cut at another PDA site.
- I wouldn't pay $249 to buy one. I was temped to dump my VDX and move to color and bundle the phone with the Prism last month - but I hesitated.
- but at this price (with a $39.95 monthly Cingular plan) I can't refuse.
- I suppose they'll come out next month with a new PDA the size of a quarter with 64k color, phone and TV built-in. But I don't care. Whatever they release will be more than I want to pay!
- Bottom line is: I CHOSE not to pay $249, I CHOSE not to pay $149. I CHOOSE to pay $49. If Handspring cuts the price to $9.95 on Friday, I've simply made a bad choice. No one but myself to blame. Life is choice: make yours and get on with it!

Yahoo! I ordered one too. I was wondering if the deal was for real when the site was not updated this morning. With the news that it works in certain places in Europe, I'm all set for my vacation next month!

the deal:

Voicestream 75 minutes talktime with a "promo" of an additional 500 minutes monthly for the entire year. Plus the Datastream package to be able to get on the web for 1000 data minutes monthly. Total $49.98 a month. (which is, at best, OK.. BUT I've got another gadget!)

Larry,
You don't need to subscribe Datastream to surf web or get email with your Visorphone.

Wow! Thanks for the info. I only hope I'm allowed to modify my order now. It would really stink, if I couldn't. I think I'll semd it back and re-order if I have to. You most likely saved me beaucoup $$ (NO, in advance if you want royalties for the "find")

I wouldn't! Read the fine print! If you send it back in 30 days, you still probably have to pay the provider the $200 cancellation fee!

Careful!

I called and talked with a VoiseStream Rep before buying. She told me that I could modify my service plan as needed, with the exception of ... hmm, how did she put it? Well it came down to the North America Neighborhood Plans. They require signing for a 12 month period. So I got the basic plan to start $20 month. and if it isn't enough I'll move up to the 600 min. plan latter.

I talked to both HS and Voicestream. They said that when I receive the chip/phone, I could simply call them and they could modify the plan, prior to me using it. She stated that they keep your plan information at voicestrem, but the chip only ID's me. So, they will just change the plan at that time no charge.

Funny thing is.. I DID call Voicestream prior to making my plan choices/buying the visorphone. I was informed I would need to purchase the datastream package. I should have asked you all first, instead of relying on a company rep...

Cool I ordered it!

Well, I took the plunge. I've been without a cell phone for a couple of weeks since my phone (which had already finished a 2-year plan) was lost (and immediately cancelled by me).

I was floundering between buying a $20 data-ready phone on a 2-year plan and buying a cable or the VisorPhone. I was a little leery about the bulkyness of the module, but then I found (and ordered) this case (also available with a belt clip).

I'll let people know my experiences when I get everything.

Cool

Cool Case!!

Anyone want to be the first to complain that the case cost more than the phone!

I think I'll stick with my Nylon - Eagle Creek knockoff case that I picked up at an Army Navy surplus store.

But If I find $55 laying on the ground I'll buy my prism a new case!

Thanks for the link!

I jumped in on this deal as well. I have an E&B non-Visorphone case, but I find I like the functionality and looks of the Vaja case better. Only $5 more - and I did notice that the case is more than the phone. How about Handspring charging tax on the $499 retail value of the phone? Yikes.

Well so much for VisorPhone, mine gets mailed back for a refund tomorrow morning. Although I do feel royally rooked that the phone dropped to $49 12 days after I bought it for $249 (and that pushed me over the edge into my decision), the deciding factor is that a Prism with a VisorPhone attached is just so darn big. I spent two weeks not wanting to carry around my Visor, and that wasn't a good thing. VisorPhone works really well (though my service did cut out a bit in areas where other customers of my cell provider using a regular cell phone didn't lose the signal). But it makes a Prism really fat and awkward. It won't fit comfortably in a suit coat and hangs very awkardly in the standard belt clip case. My hands also noticed the increased weight after spending a few half-hour subway rides reading AvantGo articles on my Prism. And it does get tiring trying not to smudge your screen with your cheek. I don't know how mileage varies for owners of other Visors, but I never thought three ounces and a half-inch of bulk would make such a difference for a Prism. Yet, at least for me, it did.

Sign me a new owner of a nifty Motorola world phone.

Smile Class action suit

I feel completely robbed.

I put down a lot of bread for the visorphone

only to find my investment completely devalued in under 60 days.

If there is a class action suit.. i want in.

Hey, if you've had it for 60 days, at least it must mean you like it.

Gee, I just bought a new car...driving it off the lot devalued it.

I'm sure the mere act of taking it out of the box devalued your VisorPhone.

Question: If you knew that in 60 days they were going to drop the price to $49 with activation, would you have really waited 2 more months?

That was really a rehtorical question, as I suspect you'd answer yes regardless.

A class action lawsuit is completely groundless.

Has anyone ordered from Vaja? I am kinda leary about ordering outside the US. If they are a good company, I will order one.

Smile Bonus! VDX Replacement!

I had forgotten about this aspect of the VisorPhone: Some of the early VDXs (and 2Mb units) have a microphone which is not optimized for use with the VisorPhone.

Handspring is going to replace my VDX (which I've had since 12/99) at no charge!

Yipee!
