GPRS In Indonesia!
Hi! I Just like to share with you guys about something new
I am writhing this article with my Visor Plat. IrDA connected with my Siemens ME45 GSM. GPRS enable phone on IndoSat-IM3 Operator.
(speed: Max: 14.4 Kb/s)
I will explain more later.
chandra.
GPRS Support
That's cool. Could you please tell me about the GPRS (General Packet Radio Switching) support in the GSM environment. Does that allow you "always on" web access from your phone? If so, can you get that to your Visor via the IR link ?
I haven't got the chance to play around with browsing directly from the phone browser. I will try that later.
Yes, GPRS allow you "always on" web access from your phone? But the web looks better on my VisorPlat with Blazer web browser.
The connection is definetely faster compare to just dialing up to my ISP with my cellphone at a speed of 9600 bit/s.
Currently my GSM operator is doing a free trial GPRS up until end of this year.No Charge for GPRS usage. After that they will change me 100K of data for (Indonesia Rupiah) of Rp100. With today's exchange rate that is around 1cent per 100K of data. NOT BAD!
To rephrase on what I was using
GSM Cellphone Operator:
IndoSat-IM3
Siemens ME45
(connected via the IR link to my,)
Visor Platinium
Software:
Blazer 2.0beta
MultiMail Pro
Chandra
Chandra that sounds great. GPRS is a bit slow in deployment in the U.S. but I think it is the technology of promise.
Various UK networks are currently looking to roll out GPRS over the next few months, but I really can't imagine it as a viable option until there is some form of wireless & non-line of sight connection between the phone and visor.
I am currently using HSCSD (High Speed Circuit Switched Data), which my mobile service provider has set to 28.8kbps. This is not an always on connection, but as I have to mess around lining up the two IRda ports, this is not a problem.
The configuration is a Nokia 6210 with Orange mobile phone network.
Nokia will soon be releasing the 6310 with HSCSD, GPRS & Bluetooth all built in, all I need is a bluetooth springboard module (which many have promised, but none have delivered

Chandra, you're a God-send! I have the same phone, and a Visor Deluxe. Same situation too. I'm in the Philippines so we're neighbors in a sense, and my provider is also giving out free GPRS till the end of the year. I've browsed the Web on the phone and have found it reasonably useful except when I hit a site that doesn't have wml content
-- makes me wonder why it's on the home page in the first place. Anyway, the reason I haven't used my Visor yet for surfing is that I can't seem to get the phone and the Visor talking. Just recently bought IRLink from IS Complete hoping that it would provide me the IR functions needed to get things working.
Anyway, the question is: how did you set your Visor up so's you could browse through the ME45? I sure hope IR Link is enough, since I paid almost US$20 for it. Still, if I need more, I'll just have to bite the bullet and give out my credit card number again.
Thanks in advance, and regards.
Now I wonder if there's any chance of SingTel (Singapore) offering something similar ... hmmm no chance! Would love to play with GPRS ..

Got it working!
Turned out that all I had to do (I think) was switch the phone off and switch it back on again. Now happily surfing the Web on my Visor through my ME545's IR, and from there to my provider's GPRS equipment. I do have a few problems though, nothing major and I'm sure I'll be able to sort them out in the coming days.
Dunno whether this is the IR Link on the Visor, my ME45, or my provider
Things are getting better.
OK, now I've located the visorcentral login, and I'm writing this from my Visor. Way cool! Means I can check on visorcentral wherever I am, as long as the area has GPRS coverage. Now if I can only get EudoraWeb working. Still using the AvantGo browser.
