Question

Does anyone know if HandiGPS will work with Quo Vadis maps?

Posted by Nhatman on 11-22-2000 08:21 PM:

handygps does not work with ANY other maps other than their own, which is ubigo. after using both ubigo and quo vadis, i am quite certain that ubigo was based on quo vadis. and at one time, a long long time ago, quo vadis was partners with handygps (nexian/navicom), but i think that fell through. anyway, ubigo does not have the scroll feature quo vadis does, but ubigo does have "editable" maps. in other words, you can write things on ubigo's maps and save them.

Too bad. Almost bought one but not going to now.

Nexian, make your GPS a standard output format and I will buy it, but not until...

i was one of the very first owners of the handygps about half a year ago. unfortunately, it didn't work very well and i had to send it back. apparently, the problem was not isolated and they stopped shipping them. i assume they have fixed whatever the problem was since they are beginning to ship now.

since then, i re-evaluated my needs and decided to go for a etrex-visor-quovadis setup. it has its advantages and disadvantages, but overall, it was the best solution for me at that time.

now, however, i am more interested in geodiscovery. they just updated their webpage with more details and pictures of the geode. a little clunky, but sounds promising. we'll just have to wait and see....

Hi:

As posted by others, QuoVadis does not work with HandyGPS. I am also one of the early owners and have not had any problems with my unit. I find tha mapping software works very well, though it does miss one feature that quo vadis has (being able to define an intersection as a waypoint.)

As for ubigo being based on quo vadis, I would go so far as to say that both are based on a base application from GDT. I surmise this by seeing the type of business that GDT is in (digital map databases).

I would not be so fast as to not look at the HandyGPS. I get bothered when I see people trash a product when IMHO it is not warranted. There are solutions that work for some and not for others, and because a solution does not work for you does not make the product a POS.

It is the same as I don't like MAC's, but that does not make it a POS.

mavidal, i'm not trying to "trash" nexian or their product. i am merely passing on my experiences and opinions about it onto others. their customer service was great when i had to return my unit. i was just disappointed that they stopped shipping them without any explaination of why. from reading other posts here, i realized that my problems with the unit was not an isolated one. i waited a long time for the handygps and was disappointed when it finally came out but didn't seem to work for many.

i know that they are shipping right now again and probably worked out all the bugs which is good for them, but now there are other products that are beginning to come out that may be worth the wait. i personally don't think that anyone here has been "trashing" nexian (especially compared to innogear). everything that has been said have been based on personal experiences with their particular unit. good or bad, they have all been "warranted". i know you were lucky to have received one that worked well -- i remember asking you about your experiences with it, that's how i realized that mine was not operating properly, and i thank you for all your help.

i just think that it was a shame that nexian had whatever problems they had, but not to mention their past problems would be wrong. as a consumer, i, too would like to know as much as i can about a product and its company, past and present.

ok, now i'm rambling. but my point is, i don't believe i saw anyone "trash" nexian/handygps with or without "warrant".

Now that I finally figured out how this new board works (been very busy, with little time to visit), I can tell you that my comments were not dirrected at you, but I have seen in general, people trash products for the hell of it, if it was warranted or not. I have seen that here in Visor Central and other visor boards.
