Problems
1) A flashing red battery light regardless of charge (OS is sending me a replacement)
2) Cant get Avantgo or Eudora to work.
3) On occasion, OS goes dictatorial, no matter where I am in my Visor, if the modem is in, I hear a click and lo! I'm in Omnisky.
4) Lost of errors, serial errors, no connection, etc.
5) 3 emails to Omnisky remain unreturned.
6) the phone help has been spotty, lots of hard resets and restores, but still the clicks and the 'bouncing ' me to Omnisky with no control.

I'm hoping that my replacement modem will be an improvement. Fingers Crossed.

Any improvement since you received your replacement modem?

Modem Recognition

Hi - I have had all the same problems as mentioned and tried all the solutions. The Hard Reset restoring of Data is Hell! And of course its the first option tried by Tech Support.

First Off Try This.

- Use Back Up Module and get BackUpBuddy to make reinstalling of data easier

- Do not use the power off switch to turn off modem, use instead via Minstrel Icon the Connect/Shutdown button at
base of screen - Seems to work with less lock up risk

For "modem not connected" error message

- I discovered by accident that if I went to the Minstrel icon and got the "unable to connect" message - I pushed the menu button and under Minstrel merely looked in Network Preferences - usually changeing nothing, but occaisonally putting my name back in if missing, and this wierdly enough usually magically got the modem recognizeing itself.

I have no idea why this worked but it has several times for me. Sure beats automatically uninstalling and reinstalling each time this occurrs, which are the only other solutions I have ever seen.

I do not advocate changeing anything regarding configuration while in those menu options - I just found that merely looking there gets the thing recognizeing itself again - Totally Wierd!

Hope This Helps! - Gita

As a YadaYada user of the Minstrel S product I have no such problems and have had been incredibly happy thus far.

You and me both. I read all the posts in this thread with my jaw on the floor. I can't believe you folks are talking about the same product as I have - the Novatel Minstrel S modem. The only fatal exception crashes I get are in association with DateBK4 - and since I downloaded that killer app and got my Minstrel at the same time, it's hard to tell who's to blame. If I use the Date Book app in ROM, I get no crashes. Ever. The service can be spotty, but that's usually when I'm hurtling through the 'burbs on a commuter train.

My friends, it's an OmniSky software problem. It has to be. Either that or Novatel sent Yadayada's subscribers (all seven of us) the good modems. The little bastard should work just fine regardless of whose software you're running. Do what linuxopus did and delete all of OS's files (I deleted all YY files on mine) and just use it for connectivity.

I have to agree that the OmniSky software must be problematic. They also ticked me off mightily by not supporting the Visor Deluxe and by spamming me.

I had some problems with my YadaYada Minstrel S that boiled down to needing a new VDX. Handspring took care of me, and I'm in business.

I haven't had a single hard reset.

All soft resets have ceased since I made sure to first turn off the modem (doesn't seem to matter if I use the Power Switch app or the Minstrel app) and then go to the Applications Launcher or some piece of non-Minstrel software before I remove the Min S.

I did a really weird problem, in that at 7:32pm every night my VDX would try to HotSync and wouldn't stop (successful or not) until I gave it a soft reset. However, that was before I got the Min S. I got rid of that problem (finally) by doing a hard reset and being selective about what I reinstalled. I have about two meg of crap that was installed before and isn't now (yes, I'm a packrat). I imagine that some software I had before was poorly behaved.

I haven't checked the RSSI on my Min S against the Min V or anything else. Anywhere my Verizon cellphone works around here, YadaYada works. It works better, in fact, than my cellphone does, in my office.
