So does this DCH-M9 work with Samsung 3500 with no additional cables/modifications? Or is this the one you have to modify yourself?

Posted by brianhall on 03-15-2001 07:43 PM:

This is a DB9 male modem cable that you can connect to the Samsung PC to Phone cable. The modification is that now the DCH-M9 provides an "always on" RTS as well as DTR (which it did previously). This was needed for some phone to PC cables (such as the Samsung one) to work properly.

help

Hey guys. I've been reading this thread trying to figure out how to connect my VDX wirelessly using my cell phone. However, you are all quite a few steps ahead of me. As I said I have a VDX, and my phone provider is Sprint PCS. My phone however is the Sanyo 4000, and I'm nervous that this phone isn't supported since it was not a huge seller. Any help would be appreciated!

Smile Summarization, please

I have been following this thread for the last week or so hoping someone would find a way to use the SCH-3500 with the Visor. Since this has now succesfully been done, would someone please summarize what it takes to make this work. Please include all required parts and how to connect them as well as software configurations. Thanks to all who figured this out!

Lightbulb Steps for a 3500

There are two ways to hook up to a 3500 from a visor.

1) Wait for Supply-Net's cable, that is the cheapest by far, but it isn't shipping yet - should by 4/1 though. That will set you back about $40 or so...

2) Get the MarkSpace Handspring-Modem Cable, the modified new version with the extra lines hooked up. That will run you about $30. Then you will also need a Samsung Data Cable, which will run you another $40-50 depending on how you get it. I bought mine (Belkin brand) at CompUSA for $40-something. Hook both of these cables together and follow the network settings to dial out using the QNX quick-connect.

The 2nd solution is bulkier, and more expensive. I would wait for #1 myself if you haven't invested already in the Samsung data cable elsewhere... The only advantage to #2 is that you can hook your cellphone to a laptop also using the samsung cable.

The last thing you need to do is make sure your cellphone has the wireless web option. Sprint charges $10/month and then your minutes using the visor count as regular voice mnutes. Otherwise you will be hit with a .39 cent per minute charge for data calls... If you use the visor more than 40 minutes per month, the $10 looks better and better...

This is for Sprint PCS users, I don't know what the differences for Verizon, VoiceStream, etc. are, but I am sure they are comparable.

Hope that helps!

Thanks! That definitely helps.

What/where is the QNX quick-connect?

Question Edge and Supplynet cable

I have been eagerly reading this discussion about the Samsung phone 8500 and the coming cable for the Visor. Will this cable fit the new Edge or is it only for the older models? I'm hoping someone will know. I'm trying to decide between buying the Edge and the Prism.

Thanks!

Sue

Edge

No it'll not fit the new edge. But I think they're working on a new cable.

oops. Try QNC not QNX, freudian slip...

Do a search on the message boards for QNC and you will find more on that subject. Basically if you have Sprint PCS and the wireless web option turned on, you just need to set up a connection using #2932 as the phone number (need the pound sign), and then 'web' for both username and password.

You don't need an ISP this way, best way to go.

alternate logon

What is the alternate to QNC? (please details steps as above) In other words, how would one make a connect using a regular isp? I have the cables and have not been able to get a dial out. Thanks!

Goto http://www.cables4pdas.com and click on the Visor Settings link on the nav bar on the left.

Try this web site. It has a tutorial on making a connection wit QNC or using your ISP.

The MS cable that I got shipped with a film over the connectors... so - rub it with a little 000 steel wool and it works great. Thanks!

Cool

Yesterday I got the Belkin Samsung data cable and using John Navas site got my SCH 8500 successfully connected to my laptop. He has very complete instructions.

I have ordered the supplynet cable to connect that phone to my yet to be ordered Visor. I'll probably order a Prism since a cable for the Edge isn't ordered yet.

Thanks to all who contribute their knowledge in this forum. I "knew more" than the Visor rep yesterday at Comp USA. I told her she should hang out here if she really wants to learn the ins/outs of the Handspring products.

Question Anyone else with this problem?

When I connect using the 3500, the phone says data 14,400, but the Visor reports it as 300. I seem to recall this issue before somewhere, and I am reasonably sure it is inaccurate on the Visor end, but does anyone know how to get the Visor to report the actual speed?

Posted by euangel on 03-26-2001 12:08 AM:

Finally broke down and ordered a cable from SupplyNet this weekend. I'm going on a trip the week after their shipping date, so I hope I will have it by then. Did anyone else notice that the price on them briefly went up to $39.95, and is now back at $29.95? Or am I just imagining things?

I have the same issue on my StarTAC. I'm not sure why the Visor only shows 300 but it certainly is faster than that.

I have the same problem when using my Nokia 6185 (which is a Nokia 6188 PCS made for Clearnet)with a Mark/Space cable and the Nokia DLR-3 cable.

I am extremly excited about the outcome of this thread. I would like to thanks patwoods for the hard work and time he has spent on this problem.

Just to summarize. As of right now, there are two ways to connect the Prism and the SCH-3500

1) Wait for the all-in-one cable

2) Buy two cables and jury-rig them together )I don't have a laptop so I don't care about the lack of connection there)

Then simply set up a new "connection" in the Prism?

The thing is here, I don't hav a prism yet. This thread will determine if I buy one or not. I sure hope it turns out well.

Thanks to everyone who is contributing.

yep

Exactly.

If anyone is interested in a cable solution that works today, I am selling my Samsung/Visor cable solution. Check over in the For Sale board for more info.
