A Perfect OmniSky Experience
Last week we went on vacation to Cape Cod. While I was excited to listen to Red Sox games on the radio, I really wanted to follow the Yankee games (please, let's not turn this into a baseball chat room by dissing or cheering on any particular team). We all know how finicky OmniSky can be. At home I get perfect reception when it's resting on the USB Visor charger, but move it to another room and I get no reception at all.
I found that in the town of Orleans, I could sit on the bed of the house we rented, and using either the Baseball Live pqa, or even better, Blazer and Yahoo! Sports, I could follow the game channel and get constantly refreshing info on ball and strike counts, etc. To me, this is what OmniSky was made for - away from home, and checking my e-mail and following a ball game.
I read a lot of *****ing about OS on this site, and God knows, at least 75% of all of my Prism problems involve OmniSky,the latest being that Afterburner 3.0z will sporadically cause the OmniSky Power Switch or Minstrel icons to display completely blank screens no matter what the Afterburner speed selected - I had to go back to Afterburner 3.0u to eliminate the problem. But since I had what I would consider a week of perfect OmniSky service, I thought I should share it with the group.
I know what you mean. Although I don't use Omnisky, I have the Minstrel S and CDPD coverage in Houston is terrible, unless you are sitting on or next to a freeway outside of downtown. Like at my house, I can get a semi-reliable signal in only one room of the house. But when I go to Austin, the thing rocks - I can be anywhere in town, in any building, in the basement, wherever, and turn the Minstrel S on and bam - it's connected and in business inside of 5 seconds. So your experience may have more to do with CDPD service coverage than Omnisky, FWIW.
