-- ISPs for Moden (http://discussion.visorcentral.com/vcforum/showthread.php?threadid=8267)
I was curious if anyone has had any luck with free-ISPs and the handspring modem. I am looking into getting on for when I am on trips so I can check mail and stuff, but I do not want to pay for another ISP that works aroung the nation? If you have had luck, just list which ISP worked. Thanks a lot.

I can tell you that with the Thincom modem, NetZero does NOT work. The banner ads eat up too much of the memory. Don't know if this happens with the Handspring modem too, but I would suspect it does.
On the other hand, Juno is supposed to work without a hitch.
Word of warning, though --With a free ISP, the username and password that you type in are not the same that the ISP uses. Once you enter your username and password, the ISP will encrypt it and use the encrypted version. To use a Visor modem with a free ISP you have to enter the *encrypted* version manually. You need a program called RASSPY to find out the encrypted version of your username.
YOu can find a link to the RASSPY page along with more info on free ISP's at http://www.geocities.com/daveinfopa...ot_freeISP.html
Enjoy.

The http://www.geocities.com/daveinfopa...ot_freeISP.html webpage does have a setup procedure for NetZero. It is labeled "How to configure your Palm device for using NetZero.net."

I know -- I tried it and it didn't work. I kept getting an error message that says "Buffer too small". I contacted the people at Card Access and they agree that it was probably the banner ads that were causing the error message. That might be a hint that other modems could possibly work with NetZero.
I didn't really like NetZero anyhow, so it all worked out for the best. :-)
