Question Visor Deluxe, Nokia 8290 and IrDA

Is it possible to set up my Visor to use my Nokia 8290 phone as an IrDA modem and connect to the Internet? I cannot seem to get the two pieces of hardware to recognize each other at all. Do I need to contact Cingular to set up my Nokia as a modem?

Also -- if I CAN get this to work, do I need to buy into an ISP for that or does my Cingular account have web access numbers I can use?

Not sure how to enable CSD (circuit switched data) on Cingular, however, this page should help you get the jist of it with Voicestream:

It is definitely possible to connect the two - I use my 8290 with my Edge, but I'm on voicestream so I can't provide any config. details.

Maybe someone else can enlighten us?

You will probably need a dial-up ISP.

I also use a Visor Deluxe and Nokia 8290 on VoiceStream.

You need a program like IrLink (shareware) or ComLink (freeware) to redirect your serial output to the IR port, and you need to a) install SerIRCommLib from the Palm "IREnhanc" download and b) enable IR on the phone.

You dont need a separate ISP because Cingular has some type of ISDN wap gateway that you can use.

I did some searching and here's some settings using an Ericsson T39 and Cingular:

You can probably swap those settings for the voicestream settings in my post above.

Unhappy

Well, I'm getting absolutely nowhere with Cingular... and Voicestream isn't offered on the West coast.

Would it be more prudent if I just bought a VisorPhone and transferred my SIM card from the Nokia? My Nokia's getting older and the speaker in the earpiece is starting to distort anyway.

I had a Glenayre @ctiveLink, but I was never able to get it to connect to SkyTel -- it stayed in "Storage" mode no matter what I did.

Uh... Voicestream is BASED in Seattle.

They're going to be launching really really really soon in California and Nevada as their new name : T-Mobile. If you can wait until early July/Aug, I would consider switching to them.

You will have to contact cingular to get CSD settings for the visor.

Talking

Oops. Color ME embarrassed. It's just that the only time I ever connected to Voicestream was when I was roaming in Washington DC, so I assumed that it was an East coast thing.

Hey -- what about my Glenayre @ctiveLink? It was brand-spanky new and did everything it was supposed to do with all the little lights and stuff... except connect with SkyTel. I never actually got it to do that last step, and ended up cancelling my SkyTel account. I still have the module, though, and I'd love it if I could get it to work. Trying to line up IrDA ports on the Nokia and the Visor while stuck in LA traffic and driving a stick shift isn't exactly the safest thing to do.

I seem to remember reading something about having connection problems if you try to use an @ctiveLink with an older-model Visor Deluxe (it was NOT part of a bundled deal -- I got the module as a standalone unit). Does ANYONE know of a downlaod patch or something that may address that?
