Thinmodem or Thinmodem plus?

So I finally got around to setting up my visor to log in to my client's network so I can access their systems and so on... This will be really handy for those times when I'm on call for support (based on comments on the cost and service of Cingular, and the fact that I've got 4 phones and 3 pagers with Verizon, I'm going to hold off on the VisorPhone for now.)

Anyway, I've got the Handspring modem, and it works okay, but I'd really like one that fits flush. I've heard of problems with the Xircom, and 33.6k is plenty for what I'm going to be doing, so I'm not interested in paying for the speed upgrade in the same size module. So, my choices are: stick with the HS modem (would make my wife happy), get the ThinModem ($80), or the ThinModem+ ($120, but with 8megs).

I have Matchbooks and FlashPluses, so the memory doesn't seem all that attractive. Saving $40 would be nice. On the other hand, if one can run apps from the ThinModem+'s memory, I could put the terminal apps, web browser, etc. in the modem memory, since I wouldn't be using them unless I had the modem installed.

Aside from cost, an advantage to the Handspring modem is the RJ-11 jack; it looks like the ThinModems use a dongle.

Also, can one get rid of the built-in apps on the ThinModems? I use Eudora and will probably get Blazer.

Thanks in advance!

Get a thinmodem for $45 plus tax.

Buy Thinmodem from Staples.com for $100, use $25 off $100 coupon code.
There is a $30 rebate from cardaccess.

Final price: 100-25-30 = $45 plus tax

If I were serious about it, I would buy it for $100 less the $25 coupon using an AmEx Blue, Pricematch it with PalmGear for a $20 rebate, send in for the $30 rebate, and get it for $25.

Problem is, I really, really suck at rebates, and I don't have a AmEx Blue. 8^)

It's not so much the cost, but is the 8mb on the TM+ worth the extra cost?

I know you said that you aren't in dire straits for memory, but I have to say it's very nice to not have to swap modules all the time. In fact, before I got VFS running, my Thinmodem+ was the module that stayed in my VDX. It had the modem, plus I was able to keep Noah Lite, e-books, and a bunch of games. I don't know how much you would use your modem, but if I was going to use mine a lot (which I tend to) it's worth the money not to have to swap out, or even carry, other modules with me.

What coupon? Where does one find it?

Thanx!

Try <http://www.techbargains.com/>. They list coupons for a lot of sites.

btw, I went ahead and ordered the ThinModem+ from PalmGear at 20% off. I figure the dongle negates any real size savings versus the Handspring modem, but I think being able to put the relevant apps into the extra memory and not have to have them on the visor all the time is a big benefit. At least, that's what I'm gonna tell my wife... 8^)

Want a better deal? Just found this on staples.com:

Visor Thinmodem & Targus keyboard bundle promotion now(10/15 - 10/20).

Visor Thin Modem($99) + Targus Keyboard($99) + some pens($2) = $200 - $40($40 off $200 coupon) - $80(staples rebate) = $80.

Too bad staples require original UPC, otherwise combine it with Cardaccess' $30 rebate to get both for $50.

Enjoy!

I have the Thinmodem+.

The only problem I found, is that I wanted the extra memory for some memory hungry applications (as BDicty with EnglishGold & SpaEnglish dictionaries, and TomTom Citymaps with a big map of London), and neither can be run from the module.

Besides, a lot of apps. keep saving their data on the main memory, without caring where are they stored.

I tried to keep my internet programs on the module (ICQ, Eudora, etc), but they insisted on saving its files on my main memory.

Otherwise, it's a great module.
Just my $0.02
