Are Visorphones w/service activation locked ?

I am planning to buy used Visorphone and I am wondering if phones sold in US w/ service activation locked ?

Can I simply plug-in my SIM card and start using it with local GSM operator ? Or the phone itself is locked to specific provider ? (VoiceStream)

Are there any workarounds ?

ps. I've seen discussions about unlocking Visorphones after Omnisky dropped the service in UK. So, I understood the phones were locked.

I read that the VP are not locked, even on contract. The catch is that you have to pay the monthly fee to the Telco until the contract is finished - even if you use your VP with another carrier, of course.

*You're* locked with the carrier...
