-- Recommend GSM 800/1800 phone with IR (http://discussion.visorcentral.com/vcforum/showthread.php?threadid=14742)

This applies to those in Europe, Australia and Asia (except Japan). Phones in the UK are usually the same as those available in Malaysia (My Sony CD-5 had UK prizes and stuff).

I'm looking for a good (hopefully cheap) mobile with an IR port that will allow me to connect to the internet using my Visor's IR port to the phones IR port.

I found a discussion that had somebody getting the Nokia 6210 to work, but that phone is a bit steep for me. I'm not that interested in having Wap support on the phone, just the IR and internet connection.

If you have good experiences with any phone models, please post your recommendations and any problems you might have. Speed isn't critical, I would only be checking email and ICQ messages sometimes.

Any advice would be much appreciated as always!

I found discussions that say that what I'm looking for works great with a cheap phone like the Siemens C25. But they also say that I need software like IRLink.

I have an Edge and in connections preferences, it does have an option for IR-Link to PC/Handheld. Do I still need IRLink then?

I use a Motorola Timeport L7089 with my VDX which works fine.(plus BeamSync to augment Palm OS 3.1 IR capability)
As far as I know, the Edge uses OS 3.5 which has IR support built-in, so you don't need IRLink (or BeamSync[similar app]) to make it work.

Thanks.

Will add that to the list of phones I'll be checking prices for. I like the look of it (I hate the tiny flip Motorola phones).

What's the speed limit for the internal modem? The Siemens is quite slow at 9600bps only.

Also could you tell me what the procedure is to connect to the internet on a GSM phone? If I subscribe to a data line, do you still need to fill in the network options? For example if I'm using a WAP browser on my Visor, and it says Service Connection Progress, is the settings in Network (for PalmOS 3.5?). I have no clue at the moment. My guess is that I first select connection as IRcomm-Modem. And then fill the settings on Network.

Is there a FAQ for 3.5x anywhere for this? Searching through the discussions, it seems everybody is using the Deluxe (3.1) and not the newer Visors. if they're using the IR port of their phone.
