-- RS232 to cellphone connection (http://discussion.visorcentral.com/vcforum/showthread.php?threadid=5570)
rmapes,
The Qualcomm 1960 & 2760 have TTL coming out on the phone side.(I've bought the cable and traced the signals) Are you sure your's need's it. The sprint cables that I've taken apart all seem to use the ADM207E chip to convert the RS232 to TTL, and suck power of course.

Pel, you only need one.
Pel,
You only need a single cable, like the one I am selling, to connect a Visor to a StarTac. Other phones have different signal requirements. Right now I have a StarTAC cable and am testing a Qualcomm 1960/2760 cable and a Sanyo 4000 cable, with a Samsung 3500/8500 in the near future. Although, all but the StarTAC are vaporware right now, I am working to expand my offerings. Gameboy70 has a sprint cable already, so he just needs to get it connected to the Visor, hence the need for the MarkSpace Serial cable, which he'll be able to hotsync with too, the MS cable that is. Hope this clears it up for you, but if you have other questions, I answer emails too.

I have the Samsung 3500. If I had the Samsung data cable and the USB hot sync cable, how difficult would it be for me to make a cable? I would use the Visor adapter off the USB cable and the Samsung adapter off the data cable, but that's about all I know.

My SprintPCS Touchpoint (made by Denso Wireless, not QualComm) data cable uses the Maxim max3238EAI chip to do the TTL/RS232 conversion. Make me a short cable and I'll buy it.
Thanks

Samsung 3500 hookup
I have a data cable (Belkin) and my serial cradle, plus a null-modem adapter hooked from the 3500 to the Visor. I can make this phone work fine from a laptop and desktop PC with the data cable. I have no problems doing anything with that setup.
My problem is that I can get the Visor to dial out as a data call, it will connect, then the TX bar lights up, which indicates incoming data. But the Visor never seems to get that information, and it times out the phone call and it hangs up.. Like I said it works fine with the PC.
Is this part of the DTR power issue that (supposedly) the MarkSpace cable addresses? I can get terminal software to issue AT commands and I get the OK from the phone back, but once it is a data call, nothing.

What is the opinion on the MarkSpace cord then? Will it do the necessary conversions? If so then I think I have a real solution then!
NYSEBull, any chance on you getting a prototype working for the 3500 any time soon? MarkSpace is (again) sold out until end of Feb-March timeframe....
Sony CMD-CD5 not dialling
Hi there, this may be a little off-topic, but I think it's the most appropriate thread anyway...
I have finally managed to build my own custom cable to hook up my Sony CMD-CD5 GSM phone (I'm in Europe) to my Visor. Thanks to TTL levels on both the phone and Visor, the cable was pretty straightforward to build. The cable works as expected, I have checked it with the "Online" terminal emulator for Palm; I can send "AT" commands to the phone, and it will respond. So far, so good.
However, I'm not able to initiate a data call; when I type for example "ATDxxxxxxx", it responds with "ERROR". I found out that I could initiate a voice call by appending a ";" to the number ("ATDxxxxxxxx;"), but that's not what I want.
So my question is, is there something I need to do to enable data calls? Some AT command I need to put in the init string? I have double checked, there is nothing in the phone setup, only serial speed. I have also checked with my GSM provider, they say that data service is activated on my account. I don't even dream that the Sony support would give me a helpful answer about this.
Any help appreciated...

I'm ONLINE!!!
Okay, so it wasn't as easy as it should have been but I'm online now!!! One key was that I reset the visor while the phone was connected and on. That seemed to make a difference. For a while, I had only been able to dial for hotsyncing and not into sprints network, but the reset helped that.
Big thanks to rmapes and everyone else on this forum who provided /much/ needed information. I went so far as to open up my brand new connection kit to test the pinouts. (They don't test like they're supposed to) Thanks to all! I'm happy and online for the first time in months!!!!!
Jesse
the happiest visor owner on the block!
Now we just need someone to create a case or clip that will mount a Visor and a Startac together, so we can have a "unified" device.

Velcro works.
It ain't the prettiest thing, but I took some 1 1/2" wide velcro and put it on the back of each device. With them stuck together, I can hold onto the phone which sits more comfortably in my hand than the Visor.
patwoods, I'm actually testing the 8500 today.

Samsung 3500
nysebull, you da man! hope your cable works with the 3500!
Keep us informed, how long of a cable do you plan to make? I would only need a 12" or less cable as far as my scenario goes, the shorter the better.
Thanks!
Mark Space Modem Cable and Samsung 3500
FYI. I have not seen this information on the thread and wanted to share it. I bought the Mark Space modem cable and still cannot connect the Samsung 3500 to the Handspring. By the way you can get the data cord from Samsung directly (800-SAMSUNG) for $40 and not have to pay Sprint for their sofware. It works just fine when connected to a serial port an a laptop. All by itself Windows actually sees a serial modem and talks to it, which I find amazing. Without the Sprint Dialer software the connection rate is 14.4 and with the software they say you can get 56.6, but I don't care. Anyway, I purchased the male modem connector from Mark Space and have tried it with and without a null modem for good measure. I have, like many of you, tried connecting with a serial cable also with and without a null modem. The Data cable works fine with my laptop through the serial port. So here is my question, if the Samsung is acting like a serial modem to the laptop, why can't the Handspring talk to it like a serial modem through the Mark Space modem cable? I am not sure whether or not I have a good Mark Space modem cable because I should not and cannot use it to sync (as has been pointed out) even with a null modem. I have not dug up an old external serial modem, because this is already taking too much time, but I guess if I did and the Handspring was able to connect then I would have my answer. Anyways, when someone comes up with a short single cable to connect from the Handspring to the 3500 I'll buy one and some velcro. By the way, the Samsung 3500 is one of the most popular phones sold by Sprint. There should be a good market for such a cable.
Samsung 3500
Dude, tell me about it. I have a cable coming from MarkSpace, and I will fiddle with if for a few hours, but I am skeptical at best.
The cable from nysebull is apparently being tested now with the 3500/8500 phones and is just what you (and I and everyone else) wants, it's a short 1-cable solution for all our connection woes.
You're right, though, ya figure it would have been on the market for months by now since the 3500 is selling like hotcakes.
You should also make sure your phone is up to date on the firmware as I hear they are quite finicky when they actually are working as a data modem.
Have you been able to get the visor to at least dial out yet? I can get that far but no further with the cradle/null modem solution. I hope the MS cable will complete the puzzle...
