VisorPhone/AirPrime - passthru modem?
Hi all,
I'm wondering if anyone knows if the VisorPhone or AirPrime card can specifically be used as a pass-thru modem for a laptop?
Here's what I mean -- many of the Motorola and Samsung phones will let you use them as a modem for your laptop if you simply get a special "data cable". The cable is serial on one end, and custom (for the phone) on the other. You hook it up to your laptop, and use the dialer software to get onto the internet over your cellphone. It's slow, but works nicely on trips where you can't get a phoneline.
I'm wondering if the same capability would be possible with either the VisorPhone or AirPrime. I'm guessing that it's probably not, but it would be a killer feature if it could! Imagine, mobile 144kbps for your laptop once 3G comes out!
Happy Holidays to all!

I agree that this would be a nice feature. My guess is that this could be done by writing an application that handles the details of connecting the module and the hotsync connector. This would require that the VP or DL have accessible API's (AirPrime does have an SDK available for the Digital Link).

With my Samsung I300, I just put it in the included serial hotsync cradle, run the Windows "add new hardware" manager to tell Windows that it has a regular 14.4 modem connected to com1 (my serial port), tell my dial up software to use that modem connection I just set up, Windows recognizes the phone as a regular 14.4 modem and dials out and connects to the internet without a problem. A very nice, unexpected bonus especially since I can use the included serial cradle. I wonder if a similar setup could be done with a Visor+VP/SB3000?
