-- Reception of YY (http://discussion.visorcentral.com/vcforum/showthread.php?threadid=12205)

Posted by jschaff on 02-24-2001 07:11 AM:

I have YY with a Prism/Minstrel and get lousy reception when using the YY browser. I bit better when using AIM.

I borrowed a friend's Platinum and found it to get much better and quicker reception.

Has anyone else found that their Prism is slower if it connects at all, but the Platinum does not give any problems?

Thanks

Have you traded it in for an optimized?

All Prism's and Platnium's are "optimized", and there is no need for it to be sent into Handspring.

As to why you are having this problem, I don't think that I can help you.

I have the same problem. If my reception is poor,
B&W or Grayscale apps work fine, but as soon as i switch to
a color app (blazer, avantgo), I lose the signal. Could
the screen actually be causing interference when its
in 16bit mode?

I've wondered that myself...

I think the Prism must be the noisier (RF wise) of the new RF optimized units..

more testing !!

Sorry, I should read the posts as opposed to scanning.

Pardon my VDX reference.

I actually did call YY at one point, and they said that I should call Handspring and ask for an optimized Prism. I then called HS and they told me that "optimized" means that they use a different frequency to reduce RF interference and that the VDX was changed up to match the Plat and Prism. But that is not the answer to this dilemma.

I use teh Minstrel modem with omnisky and i have terrible reception as with teh prism....i am very disappointed i use teh omnisky service in chicago.....

I also get terrible reception, and I'm in New York City during the day and New Jersey, just outside the city at night. Reception comes and goes, and is definitely worse with color apps.

I think the minstrel s and prism combo was "not ready for primetime"

SALPAP

I roam all over Chicago (I have two homes) and receive great reception in Chicago. However, I have noticed the Lincoln Park area to be a little shady. I bet it is the Trixies and their cell phones.

I then go to Libertyville, and usually 95% of the time get the same signal. Sometimes, one a really bad storm or something I might catch a blinking green light every so often.

Slow flashing green light means poor cellular reception, or it's looking for a cellular tower.

Fast flashing green light means it's connecting to the network. Fast flashing only lasts under a minute to 30 seconds. Fast flashing always comes after slow flashing. Of course it may happen so quickly you don't noticed the slow flashing, especially if you are in an area of good cellular reception.

I've noticed after a few minutes of slow flashing, the green LED goes solid although it's not really connected.. (I think it gives up) When this happens it's best to use the minstrel power switch application and turn it off.
