Give me a break

Could you do your reports in QuickTime for those of use who don't have the tenacity to deal with trying to install WindowsMedia Player 7.01 on our Macs. Forget about it on MacOSX and in IE 5.01. I continue to get path problems and can't open playlists errors. Installed in Netwcape and IE 5.x. If it's too much trouble that's OK too.

It looks like a Carbonized version of Windows Media Player will be available soon. This will help.

Give me a break, too

Windoze media player sucks donkeys! Use real player, quicktime or something else that works.

Arrow Windoze

Get it? He wrote Windoze, not Windows! Ha-ha! Wooh!

We choose WMP this time because its installed user base is MUCH larger than QuickTimes.

We tried QuickTime during PC Expo and didn't serve too many streams. RealPlayer is out the questions, since their server is way to expensive (and their player is really cluttered).

Once we get back to the office we can look into converting the streams to other formats.

Thanks,

Just another example of how Microsoft wins the fight simply by being bigger...not better.

And its cross platform abilities are MUCH worse.

One of the reasons I chose a Visor was that it was Mac compatible out of the box. I'm sure many other people did the same.

It's a shame then that the "#1 site" doesn't follow the same philosophy.

WMP was - certainly the last time I looked at a Mac version - a buggy heap of junk. And now I'm on OS X, it's completely out of the picture.

QuickTime is at least reliable, the server is open source, and with a modern browser, it should install pretty much automatically on a PC if it's not already been put there.

Please don't let VC become another little "If you're not on Windows we don't care about you" corner of the web.

Nigel.

Truer words were never spoken. AOL was once predominantly MAC users and MAC inspired. It's big business now and basically a waste of time. Forums, content, and usefulness are dull. But it is big. Not good. But big.

So I did listen to VisorRadio on my WMP running in Windows and couldn't believe the advertising. Class warfare in advertising, hostile attitude and all. So I endured it the first time. Second time comes around and I'm furiously pressing the skip ahead button on my TiVo remote. When Alan Graham finished up so did I. Did the same commercials repear again? Each of the phone call interviews seem to get cut off when they were on the verge of being interesting.

Personally I did not like the ad's either...

It never ceases to amaze me that people decide to buy a computer that has only 10% of the market share but whine and demand that software companies cater to them.

You made the choice to buy a Mac, now lay in it.

I hope that VC doesn't go to straight Quicktime. The only computer currently connected to the internet in my house is my dad's computer. It used to be all the computers including my own but to save money, my dad has gotten rid of the second phone line and the the dialup connection and has gone just with the cable connection, which is only on his computer. He won' allow me to add anything to his computer, no conduits, no programs, nothing. Quicktime is not installed on this computer, just WMP. So I really hope that you don't go to straight Quicktime. Probably the best solution would to provide both types of streams.

No one was demanding that any software company cater to them.

But there is a cross-platform media system, that has freely available players and servers. And it provides good quality streaming. And that means that stuff you put on a site can be seen by as many people as possible.

And it's a shame that Visor Central has decided to choose a format that cuts out a lot of their users; given the fact that Visors are Mac-compatible out of the box, you'll probably find rather more than 10% of site users have Macs.

Sadly, we'll have to look elsewhere for information about some of the things at Comdex. Just like we looked elsewhere when Palm insisted we had to pay extra for a 'Mac Pac.'

Despite your little rant, it's not about demands. It's about using available technology and standards to cater to as many people as possible.

Nigel.

Not sure if this is something that might interest you, but I recently added a 4Port Router/Switch to my home. I am using a Cable Modem and bought it to do some home networking. It has 4Ports as well as one UpLink Port for adding more Routers. Cost was only $79.99 at BestBuy and it is made by LinkSYS.

The beauty of the whole thing, is it is so simple. Not only is it a Router it also acts as your DHCP server, making home networking really easy. You just go EtherNet from your Cable Modem to your Router and then hook up your PC's. I currently have three machines attached it is awesome. Took me no time to get it working and you would not have to make one change to your Dad's Machine.

If you are interested in more details, shoot me an email. There are tons of features, especially considering the cost.

I see a poll coming!
A. Mac
B. Win
C. Mac 10
D. Have a Win - want a Mac
E. Have a Mac - want a Win

For the record I'm in choice D, but with subset a&b
a. Have new baby
b. Have zero dollars

My dad has been thinking of some way to set up a home network and hat sounds like a pretty good idea and a nice price point. I let him know about it.

Another thing to keep in mind is whether or not your ISP records the MAC address to your NIC/Adaptor. The sweet thing about the Router is it does MAC Address Cloning. This means that you set it up so no matter what machine is sending out, it will use the same MAC Address.

You do all the Router Setup via a WebInterface and it is awesome.

I highly recommend it.

I've got the single port version (already had a 16 port Netgear hub), and I have to second the recommendation. The web interface is nice, as is the port-blocking (ie, you can determine which ports a outside computer can see inside your network, and on which machine, if memory serves) as well as allowing a single system full access to the outside world (ie, no firewall, for running your own web server or playing multiplayer games on the internet). At the price, they really can't be beat.

Which player?

I don't much care. I have QuickTime, RealPlayer, Windows Media Player and others installed so I can watch pretty much anything anywhere- although I am disturbed by QuickTime in 2 ways-

a. It seems to be the quirkiest- sometimes it seems to have problems loading and playing, but if I try a different format, everything seems OK.

b. There are a growing number of movies that need QuickTime Pro and I choose to not pay for a movie viewer unless it has a lot more to offer than Pro seems to (unless I am reading the wrong ads for it.)

Mac vs. Windows? Heck, I can't stand either. Both have made some real bone-head moves; both have stolen a lot of their features from others; both are a lot more "use only us or die, pig" in their corporate philosophies than I would think is smart; both are feeding into the rush towards newer, hotter technology and forgetting their roots and old installed user bases.

So what is the difference between these guys? I just wish I knew enough about LINUX or some other platform to dump MS out of my life and ignore both of those danged companies!
