-- 16MB Visor Prism? (http://discussion.visorcentral.com/vcforum/showthread.php?threadid=10224)

I also purchased 3 backup modules, and have found them very worthwhile:-
One is my "Standard Backup" for my favorite settings and programs, which I keep as a last resort backup in case I screw up everything....
The second module is used for recent backups, of changes to data and programs over the last 1-2 weeks...
The third is used to try out new programs, or to keep large applications and databases which I don't use all the time, such as dictionary, large medical databases, etc.

They brought in an expert from Hong Kong (not sure if he is from the same company), and users are invited to bring in their machines for upgrade during a two-day period.

You can also find out about the SPUG (Singapore Palm Users Group) mass upgrade exercise writeup (with Palm upgrading Videos) at http://www.spug.org/reviews/rupgrade.htm .

without wanting to put a downer on this thread here's my $.02 - if you had a 16Mb visor/palm wouldn't you be shouting about it? So where are they?

If you hard reset your visor, you'll see that the scroll bar will appear as shown...

The memory bar is clear because over 99% of the memory is FREE, not used...

Posted by dick-richardson on 01-04-2001 10:13 PM:

Isn't it showing free memory? As in 99% of the memory isn't being used by anything. The core Palm apps would only constitute 1% of the memory in a 16mg prism and wouldn't display any black at all in the info screen (as shown). As for the owners of the 16mg visors, they probably speak Chinese or Japanese or some such. I don't know many Japanese speaking members of VisorCentral.

Well they just didn't shout in English...

In Japan there are several people who have upgraded their own Prism to 16mb.

http://www.fureai.or.jp/~mori-t/
(go to "Visor Prism Full Dress Up")

Also for about $150, this company would do it for you. I'm thinking about having it done when I go back home next time. Usually you ship your Visor to this company & they'll ship it back to you. I haven't asked if they accept business overseas but I wouldn't want to ship my Prism. Only downside of adding internal memory is that you can't use backup module once more than 8MB memory is used(They say this in their disclaimer).

A Japanese company(Hagiwara Sys-com) started selling 8 & 16MB Springboard modules. A PDA shop in Japan is selling Prism with upgraded internal memory & 16MB module(total 32MB!)for around $800.

WOW, 800 dollars for a Prism. I know that it has alot of memory, but I think that a CF card and Mathcbook adapter would be a much better option.

Service offered in Taiwan too...

PilotPlus in Taiwan is offering the upgrade for NTD2200 (roughly $70) and your 30 minutes.

I would TOTALLY do this in the US and pay up to $100 for it, but I'm really concerned about the Backup issue...I use the Backup Module all the time...I never know when the Prism might freak out when I pull a Spring Board Module...

Are there any other people out there that are addicted to the convienence of the Backup Module, to the point where this would be a concern?

Gluco,

As mentioned on Kylin's thread regarding THE PROBLEMS AFTER 16MB UPGRADED PRISM, for sure your backup module will become obsoleted

Now miss the convenience on BACKUP module especially data lost

I don't want to lose convinience of Backup module, either. So I'm still debating whether to upgrade internal memory or buy a 16MB module. Wonder if it's possible to "upgrade" backup module or make one with 16MB.

kylin, I looked at your post about your upgrade. I thought it was interesting that it was done by adding a second RAM. People in Japan are taking out the original RAM & replacing with 16MB one. Maybe that's one of the reasons upgrading costs significantly higher in Japan.

Lightbulb

You guys probably didnt think about/know this but if you upgraded your prism to 16mb, you could use a memplug http://www.memplug.com to back it up onto smart media.

Does this sound feasible?

Taki-san,

As per my understanding, the maximum capacity of EDO RAM is only 8MB/chip, where to find 16MB RAM chip? Confuse!

Question

Lacutis, hey that's a good idea! Hopefully it's no more than $60 as they say.

Kylin, unfortunately I don't know much about technical stuff so may be I misunderstood. But this person says he removed the original 8MB DRAM & installed HITACHI 16MB DRAM. You might want to ask this person directly.
http://www.geocities.co.jp/SiliconValley/7457/

Another person says that he removed "64Mbit chip" & swapped with "128Mbit chip".
http://www.asahi-net.or.jp/~TG7T-KSWG/VisorPrism.htm

Also in this page(under 12/26/00)it says new Dragonball processor's DRAM controller supports up to 16MB. Does this mean 8MBx2 or 16MBx1, or either?
http://kamakura.cool.ne.jp/mobiletake/

What do they exactly mean? Please excuse my ignorance but I'm eager to leran

Leaving for Hong Kong on monday...but probably will not get over to Betterway Development (the upgraders) until Tuesday b/c I will be at the Vietnamese Embassy and Thai Airways offices all day Monday. I'll try to take pictures and at the very least I'll be bragging by Wednesday ;-) Does anybody have anyone owing them favors in Hong Kong? I'm worried about getting our Vietnam visas :-(
