Exclamation Visorphone data call error message (0x1102)

Has anyone else come across this stumbling block when trying to use his/her VP as a modem? With a connection that worked well at the beginning of the week, I now get "Error: no carrier ((0x1102)"

When trying to get some info from HS internet tech support, the only answer that came up was that I probably hadn't signed up for data services through my GSM provider. I have, through VoiceStream, and from readin other related posts this shouldn't matter - I read about people who have not subscibed to any extra data package making good connections.

Any help is appreciated

Unhappy Me too

I had no problem connecting two weeks ago, but this weekend, nothing. That darned error message over and over. As a result (and like an idiot), I played around with my settings and have forgotten what the original connection and network settings should be. Rats.

Me too

I got that error and found that it was because I had changed my password on the web site but not in my visor Network setting. And sometimes the operator at the cellphone company says that the service is added but doesn't add it. I still get data alerts from a service I had months ago and canceled. Check to see if they actually activated the service. Make sure you have a strong enough signal. Reenter your password in the Prefs=>Network window on the Visor. Check out Handspring to get your settings at:

Unhappy Thanks but...

Thanks for the info. I did follow the link and the steps, still no go with blazer. I will try and reinstall blazer on my plat and see what happens. Thanks anyway. Any luck with you dredhead?

Nope. Voicestream claims to have activated my data service. Again, it shouldn't matter, since other VS customers don't have to have data minute packages in order to dial out with the modem.

Still no go. I get the error message almost immediately after initiating the data call, so I know it's not even dialing out. As a test, I entered my home number and my phone didn't even ring. I'm starting to wonder if it's a hardware error in the phone. I wish there was some way to diagnose the problem. I have tried using the VP in my wife's VDX, and I get the same error message. I tried a hard reset in my Pro, hoping it was a 3rd-party software conflict, with no go.

I know it's trying to dial, because I heard it doing its 1900 MHz interference with my land line phone while I sat on hold with VoiceStream tech support last night.

Consider me flummoxed.

Unhappy Still nothing

Well... I reinstalled blazer. This time I do get a data connection, but I don't get a page display when I hit the home icon. When I type in a different url, same thing... blank screen with a little apostrophe in the upper right corner. I give up. Oh well, at least I can still make calls.

I've tried pulling the SIM card, pulling the battery, hard and soft resets, whatever.

I've even tried Handspring tech support. They told me I need a different ISP - that I can't dial in to the same V.90 modem that I do from my home computer.

Is this BS? It sounds like it to me, especially since I've tried Voicestream's ISDN number that others are using - also with the same "no carrier" response.

dredhead,

I get that error message also and would like to know if you ever resolve your problem. Did you? If yes, what did you do?

Unhappy Aargh.... Help?

Okay, now I can connect via earthlink and blazer, but I get a blank page. When I checked to see the properties of the blank page I see that there are no pages in the cache. Nothing but that blinking thin cursor in the upper right corner. SO.... I tried bugme. It gave me the message that my message couldn't be sent and is being held in Outbox. So.... I tried Yahoo Messenger. It stayed on the getting friends list page and then returned to the sign in page. If anyone has any suggestions, I'd really really appreciate any help. I don't rely on the vp to surf the web, but there are times I would like to check/send email when not at home.

Here's what I did: I called Handspring customer service and got an RMA#, initiating the exchange of my possibly defective VP. The same day, I got a data connection for the frst time. Since then, I've gone for a whole day being able to connect, followed by sporadic availability, followed by data blackouts, and then back to OK.

Either I have an intermittant problem with my phone (cold solder joint connecting and disconnecting due to some arcane environmental factor) or I have an intermittant problem with GSM packet-switched data in Chicago. Both are plausible. I've been trying to reach out and see if there are any other VP users in Chicago (pr folks that have travelled through) to see if it's an issue with Voicestream's current bare-bones network in the area. I don't want to send the phone back for three weeks, only to find out that it's the infancy of GSM in the area that's to blame.

Anyone know any VP users in Chicago, aside from me?

Did ANYONE ever find a fix for this problem?

I also get the 0x1102: No Carrier error, but I am guessing that is because I haven't signed up for Cingular's outrageous data connect service. $4.95/mo + $0.15/min = too much money.

If ony I'd realized the potential of Verizon before I left them *sigh*

I've already written Cingular about their prices, but I don't expect much to change

I'm not sure about Cingular, but with Voicestream, you don't need the data connect option to your plan. I've used voice minutes to connect for the past 5 months. Everything was working fine until yesterday. I can't believe HS Tech support has no clue at all. I also can't believe THIS MANY people have had this problem, and no one has come up with a way to fix it. I've popped the phone into two other visors and get the same thing.
I'm about ready to call Handspring and tell them to send me another phone, but I can't be sure that would fix the problem.
Peace
Charles

In what area of the country do you live?

Have you EVER gotten through? If you have, it's probably not the phone. I exchanged mine, and the intermittant problems remained. In my case and several others, it's wholly an issue with Voicestream's network in Chicago.

I'm in San Antonio and bought the phone in June. Up until yesterday I had NO problem getting through. The only think I did was leave town for 5 days. I was in Vegas for a week, where it worked without any problems. I drove to Vegas, so I tested it in all the big cities between here and there and it worked fine. When I got back into town yesterday, I started getting this error message. Should I call Voicestream and try my luck with them? Earthlink is my ISP, and it's not a dial up problem. I wouldn't even know how to describe the problem to them, except there is no carrier which sounds like the modem isn't dialing out.
Peace

Well I've called Handspring and Voicestream. Both have what they call troubleshooting tickets filled out for me. VS did tell me they were having problems with data connections. She couldn't tell me how long they have been having them, or in what part of the country. Just they have had data connection problems. I'm beginning to think it is a data problem, and will try and ride this out without sending my phone in. My only question: Dred you mentioned you tried to call your home phone, and it didn't even ring. I did the same thing and got the same results. If this was a "data connection" problem, wouldn't the phone at least ring? Maybe I'm missing something, but I can't see how it's a data connection problem, when the phone doesn't appear to get past the "initialize" phase.
Again, any help would be greatly appreciated.
Peace
Charles

When I first set up my VP to work with the VS number (I call the Florida number), it worked here in Chicago, but only intermittantly. I have been traveling a bit, and it ALWAYS works when I travel (Detroit, Cleveland, Indianapolis, etc). Then about a month ago, modem access in Chicago ended completely and all I got was the 1102 no carrier error. I called VS and explained the problem. After being routed around a while, they said they were having problems with "switching" in the Chicago area and the didn't know how to fix it or how long it would take to fix it. I complained quite a bit and they said sorry and gave me 100 free anytime minutes.

i am in Atlanta and get the same error message. i guess this is a carrier issue. i recently (two days ago) had voicestream disable my "datastream" service based on the posts i have seen here.

i can place normal calls through the phone.
i cannot call my work's RAS service (local and 800#) or mindspring's Atlanta number.

it looks like it is trying to connect, then terminates with the 0x1102 no carrier error message.

i hope this is not another growing pain for the recently merged compaines. i am quite tired of being bounced around their tech support. they could use a visorphone SWAT team.

Smile Error 0x1102 Solved(Cingular)!

I was backup and running after a conversation with tech support and customer service at cingular. After three long weeks here is the fix: cingular has 'network access' not 'data services' check to make sure you have 'network access' make sure they give you an access dial-in number. when that is done you will be able to dial your own ISP number. You will only be charged if you use their dial in number and log in using your wireless window account. but the important part is that your modem gets a dial tone! just dial your ISP number instead of the network number and your surfing. Also your 'network access' has an expiration date!! so check with customer service every 3 months or when you go out of town to make sure you have it. hope this helps I'll check my bill next month to see what the fee looks like.
