-- Cracks in Prism Case (http://discussion.visorcentral.com/vcforum/showthread.php?threadid=9661)

Posted by rsachs on 11-24-2000 05:08 AM:

Three days ago I purchased a Prism at the CompUSA in Louisville. Yesterday morning, after reading about cracks in the cases of some Prisms, I looked closely at mine and found two hairline cracks, one on the side of the case and one on the top.

I called CompUSA and they told me they had four more in stock. I went out to exchange mine and we found that all four of the ones in stock had THE SAME CRACKS as mine!

It sure does look as if Handspring rushed these out to the market.

After using the Prism for a couple of days, I am hooked on it and don't want to go back to my Vx. I ordered another one directly from Handspring and hope they've worked out the problem by now.

Anyone else notice hairline cracks in the case?

Bob

Post Don't worry...

rsachs...

This has already been discussed in another thread. Those are not really cracks, but mold lines. My Prism has them also in the same place.

You can relax now and enjoy your Prism.

Cracks

I looked at the cracks on my Prism with a 10x loupe and I can tell you for sure that at least one was definately a crack and not mold line. The other was not as clear.

They are mold lines. You can see them in ALL Prisms. Look at the Gadgeteer review and you can see those mold lines on their Prism too!

Cracks in Prism Case

With all due respect to Apollo, I am familiar with the Gageteer review and the pictures of the Prism included in that review. In none of those pictures are there cracks or mold lines that correspond with the cracks I found on my Prism. I clearly see the mold lines and recognize that they are not cracks.

But on the machine I returned, there were cracks - in addition to the mold lines.

You can call the cracks mold lines if you want, but they remain clear breaks in the plastic case.

Bob: I would be curious to know where your crack appeared. As I mentioned in another thread, I'm on my second VPr, but my third one is on its way - when I placed my VPr in it's case the other day, I noticed a crack (which I originally thought was an oddity in the paint process, as it felt smooth to the touch) on the top of the unit, to the right of the slot for the snap-on cover/case tab. When I removed the cover for the Springboard slot, I discovered the crack was appearing directly above a screw (presumably) holding the housing together - it must have been tightened too much in the manufacturing process, but had passed QA because the crack didn't form yet.

At any rate, I called Handspring as soon as I got home on Monday, and they're shipping another one to me ASAP. (Although, I have to admit, I can only be SO understanding. If something goes wrong with this THIRD unit, I may just ask for a refund. I don't WANT to, because I really like Handspring's product line, but if I'm going to pay $449 for something, it had better be perfect. No cracks, no scratches, with all the bells and whistles in tact.)
