-- Nokia 8290 -> VDX Instructions (http://discussion.visorcentral.com/vcforum/showthread.php?threadid=11144)
For those interested in using their Nokia 8290 phone and Visor Deluxe to connect to the internet, I've created a rudimentary page that explains the basics of the setup. I'll be adding a few pictures and some additional links in the next week.
The page can be accessed here. Feel free to offer any feedback, suggestions, or corrections!

LMidnight,
I followed your sight, it was very helpful. When trying to dial into my ISP, my phone and VDX connect and the phone dials, but I get an error message on the phone telling me to "check operator services". I too am using Voice stream. Do you have any suggestions? Of course Voice Stream CS are telling me that I have to have DataStream to access data calls. You and I know this is incorrect, I've connected without DataStream in the past with my Visor Phone.
Regards,
Jim
I'm not sure about the 'check operator services' message. It sounds like they're no longer providing you the data service. The strange part is that you have used it in the past. I know several other people have received that message. Maybe they can shed some light.
At the risk of possibly asking a stupid question, from the web site I get the impression that no springboard modem is required. Is this true?
Lmidnight,
I think Ive gotten to the bottom of the check operator Services issue. I finally got a hold of someone at Voice Stream who was not hell-bent on selling me the DataStream product. I explained to her that I was able to connect to the web previously without DataStream. She in turn read me the following verbatim from some CS document. It stated that all accounts had Data Service turned on at activation. She further went on to explain that the system that my account resides had some software upgrades and my data service was not reactivated, as it should have been. So she went ahead and did this for me. Four hours later I received the usual SMS message 1111111 have a nice Day! From that point further I was able to connect to an ISP. Those having these problems with Voice Stream, I would recommend pushing to have the data service activated on your account and not DataStream. Most CS reps do not understand the difference. Of course the difference is $30 dollars to us mere users.

I don't know what web sight your talking about, but we are not using the springport. Just phones with built in modems.
According to all the directions I've seen, I'm doing this right, but when I try to connect (to Earthlink) I get the message from the Visor that a) it's retrying and b) modem not detected. But when I run the self-test in IRlink, it detects the Nokia 8290 as the modem. Beam receive is on, redirect cradle is checked, serial via IR (using IRSwitch DA) is set, and...nothing. Any ideas?

Lmidnight,
What have you found works for browsing and e-mail? I'm using a VDX. Eudora mail and Blazer make the phone disconnect. Do you know of a work around?
Regards,
Tom,
Sounds like ISP settings or dial up numbers. This may sound strange but I have found the most success in changing dail in numbers.
Hope this helps,
jimparson, The problem with Eudora is documented on their website. They attribute it to a problem with the 'earlier' versions of the Palm OS. I assume it's the same problem with Blazer. I use Multimail, Avantgo, and sometimes Proxiweb to surf. These seem to work well.
Tom, I had the same problem at one time. I believe I uninstalled the IRLink and SerComlLib(from irenhance), performed a soft or two and then reinstalled the IRLink and SerComlLib. I can't explain it, but this seemed to fix the problem. Every once in a while I run into a problem with the "ir library not found" message (or similar). I think this is some sort of conflict with other apps. It's happened to me when installing/uninstalling FunSMS and AOL Instant Msgr. The process I described above seemed to fix it. Go figure.
I finally called up Voicestream, and after dealing with some account difficulties I asked about the data service. The guy seemed to know what I was talking about, but was confused because apparently the part that should be activated (the service that comes with all accounts) was already activated. So he re-activated it said that he hoped that helped. I guess I'll wait and see what happens.

It worked! Mostly anyway, hehe. I didn't get the service operator message. When connecting I got a message on the Visor side "buffer too small (0x120D)". I'm trying to connect to a Juno account, any idea what this means?

I had these problems
Hey guys,
I had the 'Check Operater Sevices' Error message also. It means data is _not_ set up on your account, regardless of what your account may say. I had to go through at least three people to get this straightened out.
lennonhead: Juno uses an encrypted username/password. You need to download a utility called 'RasSpy' that allows you to see the actual username/password that gets sent to Juno. Check out http://rasspy.gq.nu/ for the App.
Also I did have a problem with AvantGo and Blazer losing the IR connection when I switched to them. The reason was I had them overclocked using AfterBurner. When I set them back to default I was online in no time.
orion, Which version of Eudora are you using? I know there is a new version, but I haven't tried it. I'd prefer to use the Eudora internet suite, but I didn't have any success.
I know about rasspy, and I've already used it. I don't think the message is related to the account info, I've double checked the long username and password. Any other ideas?

lennonhead, You may want to check out this link. It seems pretty informative and mentions Juno in particular.
It seems that handspring should have some reference material that lists error codes. I'll take a look at their website.
unreliable connections
I've been using my nokia with voicestream to connect my VDX but does anyone else experience unreliable connections. It often takes me 2-3 tried before I can get connected. I get various errors including a timeout message or cannot connect message.
Jscalia, I get pretty reliable connections. It takes me anywhere from 30 seconds to 57 seconds to connect. It's not too fast, but I almost never have any problems.
Jscalia,
My connectivity was spotty also. So I tried various dial up numbers to my ISP (EV1, Houston). I finally tried a new number with a newly created area code and my connectivity is very reliable now. In my area, I think it had to do with the phone lines and switches. Worst connectivity was with an older number dialing in to an area that has poor phone lines (Magnolia).
I tried dialing Juno from my computers modem (just the real login/pass, not in the actual program) and that didn't work. So either my Juno account was canceled, or they are trying to stop people from using their service without the ads. Has anyone else been experiencing problems with Juno?
Has anyone tried the Bluelight service on their Visors? I tried but have only gotten authentication errors so far (yes I used rasspy).
I may just have to sign up for Juno over again and fill in their 10 page questionnaire, if it is just a problem with my account.

I finally got it all to work! I got Bluelight to work, I think they are just slow in adding new users because I didn't change anything and when I tried today it worked. I'm now wireless!
