Question Anyone in LA happy with YadaYada service?

Hello all - I'm new to this forum but just spend 2 hours reading a myriad of posts on the various wireless services for Handpring. I am interested in YadaYada (only because I have a Deluxe) and have read many negative comments on this board about their service (or lack, thereof). I have, however, also read some fantastic reviews posted on other areas of the web, mostly as editorials, and wonder if anyone in the Los Angeles area has had a good experience with YadaYada.

Any help??

Rialto - Pomona service

I live in Rialto, work in Rialto, and go to school in Pomona. When my YadaYada service was working...it was working GREAT!!! (Unoptimized Prism + Minstrel S w/original antenna) But, (you knew it was coming) about two months ago the service gave out and even with many emails to and from customer service, I STILL haven't been able to get the modem recognized. Since my 6-month term is up, I am seriously considering going with OmniSky.

Good: Fast data transport (for handheld info anyway), AVAILABLE IN RIALTO!!
Bad: If something goes wrong, telephone support is impossible to reach, email is better but time-consuming.
Bottom-line, test the customer support lines before you buy, if you get tolerable responses (let me know!) then go ahead.

of course, that's just my opinion!

Question Customer service...

Thanks, NightVisitor - I noticed that I was on the phone for about 30 minutes before I actually got through to somebody to discuss the system itself. I mentioned the rumors of YadaYada folding and the service not working anymore, but these rumors were denied. Because of the glitch on their system, I am getting the modem for $30.00, so if it doesn't work out, at least I have a really, really cheap OmniSky modem...

I really hope it works - it seems like such a great option for me.

I'm from Houston, but I visited LA for a few days for vacation. I was very happy that my Yada Yada services was working in LA. I was able to check my e-mail and surf from my hotel room and on the road. This was great because the hotel charged $1 per local call for dialup on my laptop. I stayed in the N. Hollywood area and also by Disney Land.

I got strong signals and fast access with my YY service in LA. This was back in March 2001.

I was impressed! I don't know about the service now though. It's doing fine here in Houston.

I've had YadaYada in L.A. since it came out. It generally works pretty well, just depends on the CDPD service, which is either ATT or Verizon. It's hit or miss in the South Bay, but I use it to get e-mail and such on the bus and get good connections from LAX area, down the 105 and up the 110 to downtown.

Well, after about a day of working out the glitches, my YadaYada service is up and running. I'm surprised it works where I live, which is right near the ocean, as the mountains and canyons inland usually block a lot of cellular signals. Nonetheless, it works and when it is working well, it's really a great service. I'm particularly impressed with the AOL Instant Messager system and the PalmVNC server, although there's still a few bugs to be worked out with that. I will be in LA for the entire month of September, more or less, so I will have plenty of opportunity to try it out downtown. So far, so good...

Generally Happy!

I got my YY in December and have been very happy with it. There have been some downtimes, but not too many. I've been able to connect from many places. I live by LAX, work in Torrance, used to work downtown LA and have been able to get connected in all those places [not everytime or everywhere, but enough to be happy]. I used to take the Metrorail Green and Blue lines to work and, except for the fact that I didn't want to - and rarely did - flash anything worth more than $3 on the train, was able to get signals off and on during the trip. If the stub won't get me a signal, I carry a Samsung replacement antenna in my E&B case and it can usually do the trick. Despite their shaky start, I have no problems with YY's overall service.
