HI...

I just bought the Ericsson R289LX with PocketNet. My service is with AT&T in NY (would have preferred Sprint, but that is another story)

Anyway, I also bought the Data Cable, but have no idea how to use the phone's Wireless Modem capability to sync my Handspring Visor? Does anyone know how to do this? Do I need special software?

Where did you get the data cable from, I am looking to get one as well, for my R280 and can't find one?

I'm pretty sure what you need to do is have an ISP to dial into. PocketNet is service for your Phone only and I believe will not do you any good for your visor. So you could probably do without the extra $5/mo. or whatever for PocketNet and take there basic web enable service for data
cabality. Then what you will need to do is get your
datacable connected to your visor and dial out using your
phone as the modem to your regular dial-up ISP.

I have not gotten mine hooked up yet so I could be totally
wrong with the above statment, but that is what I believe.
So if anyone can confirm or deny that we would both appreciate it.

I have the Ericsson 280 as well, and would kill (ok, maybe just severely injure) for a cable to attach to my Vdx.

There was a story posted on VC a couple weeks ago about new cell/Vdx data cables, but the Ericsson 280 was not among them.

Any ideas???

sreidy, I'm guessing that you also have AT&T wireless. I have
not seen anybody in any of the messageboards on several sites
using AT&T as their cell service provider and being able to get wireless access on their Visor's. I haven't seen to many phones that AT&T offer that support data cables. If anyone out there is useing AT&T for their Cell phones and has succesfully gotten wireless access on their Visor I would
really like to know what kind of setup you have.

Well... this was a responce to an e-mail, but I thought it might be useful here...

I bought the cable at the AT&T store for $29.95 (I think)... I had a null-modem connector at home, so I was able to plug the serial end of the Data Cable to the Serial end of the Sync cradle for the Visor.

I downloaded the "modem" software from Ericsson web-site. This software allows you to connect a Lap-Top serial port to the phone and use it as a modem for the Lap-Top. AT&T will charge you $0.05 per KB of data transfer! In any case, this is useless for the Handspring. Check out this site I found (http://people.we.mediaone.net/patje...80lx/howto.html) they have everything except Palm OS.

Dr. Salami's web site also had some info on this. I found one section that noted "If you set the Network Dial-Out phone number on the Handspring as 00, it will look for the modem via the serial port", which it does, but I'm getting a Serial Port in User error message when connected to my Ericsson. So I contacted Ericsson Technical Support... they did not offer any solutions except to purchase FoneSync. Handspring Customer Support had some interesting ideas, but mainly using other phones and Ir ports.

Hopefully someone is having better luck.

The DCH-M9D

The "Port in Use" message likely comes up because the cradle grounds pin 2. I believe if you keep on going you can get the cradle/null modem to work - assuming that the cell phone provides power on one of the pins, necessary to power the cradle RS232 electronics.

If it does turn out that the cradle/null modem adapter works, then there's a cable from Mark/Space (www.markspace.com) which is more compact than a cradle and avoids the "Port in use" message since it doesn't ground pin 2.

That would be the DCH-M9D cable. However, one key feature about the use of this cable is that the cell phone does provide power on one of the pins - which you would know to be true IF the cradle/null modem adapter combination works.

Even if you have the DCH-M9D, you would still need the cell phone's data cable as well.
