OmniSky any better now?

The OmniSky wireless modem is on the list of modules currently on sale. I'm tempted, but the various negative comments at VC's "User Opinion" for the product makes me think twice. How are folks doing with this now? Are you happy with it? Problems? Thanks.

Thumbs up OMNISKY Service

I've used this module for almost a year now and am pleased with the performance. The module/software has its quirks(i.e. fatal exception/resets, etc.) but overall I've been pleased with its performance, especially coverage (I travel all along the I-5 corrider from San Diego to Seattle with almost complete coverage) and email retrieval (currently receive my emails from NetZero, Omnisky, and Yahoo! with my OMNISKY Modem). Some of the web browsing sites I can do without (wish I could permanently remove them as they take up valuable internal RAM), but overall I say the module is good. . .MHO that is.

I live in the DC/Baltimore area (where coverage is suppose to be some of the best according to OS) and after 9 months of use, I am very frustrated with it. When it works, I couldn't be happier. But coverage is so quirky no matter where I go. Unless I'm right on top of the tower, coverage is very sporadic (especially when in the car). Sometimes I can move the modem only an inch or two and it will go from having a signal to none at all. From what I've gathered after talking to Verizon and AT&T reps, whos' network OS uses, it appears as though the CDPD network is basically in place and there isn't going to be much more expansion, if any, on the network at all. They're more concerned with building their high-speed networks at the moment. I guess a better way to describe the coverage would be that it is everywhere, you just have to move around a bit to find it (and stay there once you do). It's definitely not as good as wireless phone coverage. If you don't plan to use it that often (couple of times a week for a few minutes), I would get it. If you are planning on extensive use, it will probably get a little too frustrating for you. But whatever you do, don't buy from YadaYada (they're starting to charge for roaming!). My contract with OS expires in December and I'm not renewing it. I just purchased the Samsung I300 color Palm smarthpone and am very hopeful that it will give me the wireless data coverage I am looking for. Best of luck with your decision.

Re: OMNISKY Service

I travel between san diego and ventura county about once a month(I live in the La Jolla/UTC area) Does it work well around there? Would you happen to know about ventura county?
