-- Free Omnisky Offer - Worth it? (http://discussion.visorcentral.com/vcforum/showthread.php?threadid=14787)

Ok. so when I heard about the free modem offer from Omnisky, my ears perked up. I have wanted wireless access from my prism for quite a while. Omnisky seemed to do well in the reviews, and the modem being free would be a nice touch. Then i came to this forum, and saw people complaining about revision C, and omnisky in general.

So, my question is... is it worth it overall? Is it worth $350? and what gotchas are there? Things I may not know about... for example, i think the interface at the moment is b&w... even on prisms... correct? What other limitations are there?

If you've considered wireless and don't have Yada Yada, then this is definitely an opportunity.

I got the free modem with Yada Yada back in December, and I've been loving the service! It's so awesome to check your e-mail and surf the web anywhere, anytime! I'm based in Houston and went to Los Angeles for the weekend. I could still connect with no problem!

If you have a Platinum or better and have thought about getting wireless...this is a good chance for you on Omnisky.

Here are some pictures of my VDX with the Minstrel S modem.

I would definitely go with OS, especially now that the modem is free after rebate. I use revision C with no problems. Also, I hardly use the b&w OS interface (OS will release a color version sometime this summer though). I do the bulk of my browsing with Blazer and Avantgo which are both in color. Personally, I went with OS over YY because I feared the types of problems associated with a young company that YY is currently experiencing. OS tech support is available 24/7 and I'm never on hold for more than 5 minutes. I'm not saying OS is perfect but I definitely feel they are the better provider when compared to YY (just my opinion).

OmniSky Rules

I am pleased with my trouble-free OS service. While as an early adopter for PRISM service I did go through two modems and around a half dozen troubleshooting calls, I can't say enough about the quality of support reps at OmniSky and their follow-up. The last time I had three calls from the rep who initiated my case to check on the rev. C/new modem situation. That's the way it should be. Good customer support => good software => better connections = good company culture. I hope they stick around into the next generation of wireless sevice.

What about using this service with a VDX? Will it work? How well? Any suggestions as to a better service? I'm interested in having ability to check/send email and do some minor web browsing (both not all that often).

Thx.
