I just got the blazer browser today and I must say if you don't have it yet then go and get it, It is awesome.
Can you be more specific about what you like compared to what you used to use?

From what I've heard... its not free enymore? You have to pay $19.99 for the final release. Is that correct?
Yep

Yep, it's official. Handspring just e-mailed and said 1.0 will cease to work on May 22nd and you have to pay the full $19.95 price unless you buy the VisorPhone.
I have mixed feelings regarding the price. On one hand I am bitter to have to pay for something that is so essential to actually using the web with my HANDSPRING modem.
On the other hand I get the feeling that handspring is really keeping it's product lines afloat by note trying to match the price of palm. My take is that HS is charging more for things relative to palm because they know they have loyalty, and they now they have a market, and they are keeping their profits steady as possible to maintain a good place in the stockmarket
granted I'm no expert on such things and I think it would probably be smarter in the long run to just make the best browser say handspring OR start bundling blazer with the handheld. and make it free.
I think handspring is looking to have a more conservative strategy, not try anything too radical, but make solid steady innovations so that they can stay afloat in the same pond as palm. Not kill palm, they do have a codependancy for the next year.
I mean the 19.95 means that HS can document what they gather in from buying blazer. Also they have essentially started up a software branch with a killer app as its first release. (not bad) Likewise blazer runs on other palms.
The long term plan for handspring if I am not mistaken includes a lot more than making visors... charging for it in some way makes me happy because it improves the independance of the software, as in blazer is just an application, not part of the visor, and not directly affiliated with any content provider, instead it is a browser for Palm OS that tries to support the major standards.
Kg
19.95
Well I think for the most part the cost of the software goes toward the cost that handspring incures by running the servers that blazer uses to supply you with webdata, Remember the data blazer gets comes from a sort of proxy type server that will convert and adjust the data that you see. This all cost's money to run and maintain and if it is only 19.99 then so be it I think its a great deal at least they are not charging a month to month fee for usage. Don't think of it as you are paying 19.99 for software think of it as you are paying 19.99 for unlimited server use.
I would have bought this, but I am sitting re-thinking why I hate Handango.
I have ordered from them twice and both time they have botch my order. When I ordered my iPaq from them, they had a hard time charging because of billing vs. shipping. They blocked over 4 grand on my credit card. And then further shipping 4 grand worth of iPaq's. THREE WEEKS LATER...
I hope to god that Hanspring gives them the minimal of profit for hosting the e-cart.

I purchased it from PalmGear and it wasn't instant purchase.
I got an e-mail the next day with the instructions on where
to download.

Blazer needs more features
As an avid AvantGo user my one big dissapointment with Blazer is when you hit the 'back' arrow onscreen it doesn't take you back to the same place on the previous page. If you're 3/4 of the way down on a page of links and hit a link, then hit the back arrow you'll be back at the top of the page of links, quite a pain.
AvantGo remembers where you were browsing the previous page.

Feature
A feature I would love to see is one that lets you scroll left and right instead of a page getting cut in half then shown by layering the sections.
A step in the right direction
I'm reasonably happy so far with Blazer 1.1. The 16-bit color is very nice on the Prism. Loading is OK and they do a decent job scrunching down the format to fit the screen. Going to black and white is very fast and great for looking up info quick. It really is nicer than other ones I've used but........
I don't like the way they handle bookmarks. I don't like the fact that I must always refresh when I use a bookmark because they are giving me the last view out of the cache. Where's the refresh button? Why would I wnat to see last Friday's news or stock quotes?
Just use the shortcut to refresh
Just use the shortcut
E
to refresh the page you're on. I agree that Bookmarks should have its own button on the top icon bar.
I created a solution for those that want to email via Blazer when using Verizon's QNC services or Sprint PCS services. Just go to this simple page I put together and click on the link, then change the sendto address.

Works like a charm.

I know about the shortcut but the problem I have is that then the page has to go through it's top to bottom loading and drawing all over again. I'd rather use the one in cache only if the page is no longer available and have the default be to get the latest version.
