Anyone know a good place to get a pre-paid sim card?

It would help if you told us where you are; which country would do for starters, so people can work out which networks you might need a card for.

Whats a sim card? What does it allow you to do?

Posted by nwhitfield on 12-18-2001 09:16 PM:

SIM = Subscriber Identity Module. In GSM, it's a small smart card that fits in a mobile phone. It will identify the phone to the network, and can also store some messages and phone numbers - usually at least 99 phone numbers and 10 messages.

You can move a SIM from one phone to another, thereby taking all your phone book entries and your own phone number to the new phone - it's one of the biggest pluses of the GSM system.

A pre-paid SIM is simply a SIM for a particular network for which a subscription has been paid up front - that might be for a year, or for longer.

Without knowing the country in which the original poster is resident, it's hard to give an answer to the question.

Nigel.

You are right nwhitfield,

sorry about that. I live in the US, California SFO area to be specific. I want to get a pre paid SIM card for this same area.
If you could help that'd be great. I've been calling stores around here and half the people say "we don't got that" and the other half say "a pre paid WHAT?"
I'm tired of searching =)

Lightbulb Verizon does prepaid SIMs

Check out Cingular's offerings in San Fran ..

I was looking into this as a means of using a cheap secondhand VisorPhone without having to sign up for a service plan (my credit's in the toilet, so NO-ONE will give me a "free" phone). Cingular has a "Prepaid Starter Kit" that will get ya started with $30 of airtime for $45.

Don't concentrate on asking for a prepaid SIM.. ask about a prepaid PROGRAM.. the SIM is just the delivery device.

Good luck!
