-- Change my User Name? (http://discussion.visorcentral.com/vcforum/showthread.php?threadid=18000)
Change my User Name?
I joined VC before I had a Visor (hence the nickname), but I feel like this is a community and I don't have a reason to be semi-anonymous. So I'm thinking about dropping the nickname, but I've got 700+ posts under it.
What do people think? Should I start fresh as JeffHoover or just stick with the nick?

I thought this thread might be the answer to my question, but no. But since the thread title still applies, I'll ask here anyway....
If (when?) I decide to get me a new Visor, I will most likely be handing my Dx down to one of my brothers. Can anyone post, either here or through an e-mail direct to me, the instructions to change your Palm OS owner/username (i.e. the name in the upper right on the HotSync screen)?
I did it once before a while back, but forgot how; I know it involves some simple graffitti gymnastics.....thanks in advance.
I remember Hoser_in_USA changed his name after he went back to Canada, and kept his post count. I guess if you e-mailed a moderator, you could probably change your name.

Changing hotsync name
pbryon,
There are two ways to do this:
The most obvious: Perform a hard reset (Pressing the reset button while holding the power button). This wipes the PalmOS device of all information, including the Hotsync name. This might be the preferred when passing down a device to someone else. You might not what to share all the personal information that is on your device. But then again, when passing to a family member, they may already know it all, and might appreciate having all the family address/phone entries pre-entered.
The obscure: In a text field (memo pad, the find window, what ever) perform the following: "
.5", that is "
tap tap 5". This will remove the Hotsync name.
With both methods, the next time you Hotsync the device, you will be prompted to enter or select a user name. Warning: With the second method, if you select an existing Hotsync name, instead of entering a new one, you could end up with a lot of duplicate entries.
Potter--
Thanks....the obscure way was what I couldn't remember, and was looking for.
This might be obvious -- but
If you want to change the existing username on both the unit and PC while maintaining the same data profile -- you can do so via the desktop.
Simply select the user from the upper right corner menu and edit the name as desired.
Doublee Take
Changine the user name on the Desktop does not affect the user name on the Visor in any way. The Visor would simply create a new account on the PC if it doesn't "see" one that matches the one assigned to it.
I like PDAENVY. I usually think folks are weird to use their real names on message boards and the like. Of course if you are a moderator or something....
on desktop 4.01 it does--perhaps earlier unit too
OK --
If you change (alter/ edit) am EXISTING username on the desktop and DO NOT leave the old name on the desktop
then
when you next sync the desktop software recognizes the old name from the unit and renames the unit--coresponding to the editing done.
TRY IT
add a letter to your current user name using the edit function on the desktop---sync---and you unit will have the new name with NO OTHER CHANGES other than normal hot sync
Select edit users... from upper right hand side of desktop drop down menu on desktop 4.01
Select "RENAME" NOT "NEW"!!!
alter the username.
I can't honestly say if the earlier desktop versions have the rename option -- perhaps they don't--
then of course you couldn't "rename" a user---
Hope this clears things up --- AND YES --I have done it.
and yes --if I am weird for using my real name--so be it--but I am right on this one--
Wait a Minute ... Goin' too Fast for My Feeble Mind...
I was hoping this thread would help me, but I am having trouble with the explanations. Let me tell you why. I have a friend who is trying to "reset" her Palm V or Vx with what is on her Palm Desktop. At one time there were three or more users on the PC, and she is having trouble setting things up because of this.
She did a hard reset, edit user names on the desktop to be sure only the one she wants to use is present any more in the Palm Desktop. When she HotSyncs, she gets a message about creating a new account, then she says it goes ahead and HotSyncs to one of the old user names she can't seem to get rid of, even though it never shows up in any user name lists.
Is the solution to this delemma already in what has been posted here, or are we missing something? Any help is appreciated!

A hard reset SHOULD delete the username from the handeld--At least it does so on Handsprings--Make sure you do a HARD reset and not a soft reset--
Then edit out the unwanted names on the desktop and you should be okay--
If you HARD reset the PDA--Which is supposed to return it to factory specs--- AND delete the unwanted names from the desktop---The names no longer exist and they can't come back--
UNLESS--
There is something wrong with the software on the desk top or the unit isn't truly being totally (HARD) restet--
Sorry I can'tgive you more on this--
