Red face Discussion Site Sugguestions

1) Let us edit our own polls! I never quite understood why this was never done.

2) Create something like "User points," where the total quality of your threads (from votes) gives you a "star" rating. ((0-5) So when you click on my name, in my profile I would like have 1/3rd of a star next to my name. Then you could set your preferences to: "Ignore everyone with under a 2.3 star rating" with stuff like "do NOT ignore" for those of us who still want to terrorize others.

3) Have a "Witty phrase of the day" for the BBS! It couldn't hurt!

4) Have a "Most visited post of the day" thing too! or like a top 5 list! C'mon!

Just some thoughts on your thoughts:

I would think it's so the creator can't skew the results, as in if you have a poll for favorite color and yellow's getting all the results, but you like blue better, so you change yellow to be blue or whatever, thereby making it look like your favorite color is everyone's. (or, everyone's who voted, at least).
But, if you could edit the poll up until it gets a vote, in case you make a mistake or forget something you were going to include, I think that would be useful. so, seconded, on those grounds.
it's either that or someone has to police these polls.

2) Create something like "User points," where the total quality of your threads (from votes) gives you a "star" rating.

I'd be against this because it turns things into a popularity contest, and if I were to set my prefs to exclude people with certain ratings I might miss something they had to say that could be of use to me. (though, most likely, I wouldn't set any exclusions 'cause I'd rather see what people have to say.)
besides, the current thread ratings are hardly being used. So if it's total votes divided by total threads it could skew the results real darn quick.

3) Have a "Witty phrase of the day" for the BBS! It couldn't hurt!

I like this idea. I like the "random quotes" systems I've seen elsewhere. How about that? Something we could all contribute to, with (hopefully) Visor-relevant quotes and remarks?

4) Have a "Most visited post of the day" thing too! or like a top 5 list! C'mon!

I actually thought there was something like this at VC (able to sort threads by number of views) but since I couldn't find the feature, I must have it confused with another site I visit. Which means I'm going to be wracking my brain for where for the next few days ...
the horror, the horror ...

You are confused :-D.

About user posts. Normally as in the greatest example, slashdot, this is to keep trolls out, and to make things readable. I don't think that VC has many trolls, and almsot everyone here has something to say. Based on that, I would be aganst user moderation. That's why we have Mark, and Toolkit etc.. If you don't like somebody put them on your ignore list.

About qoute of the day.... I see no reason for it.. and it probably would clutter the page it was on...

Editing your own polls. That I think is a bug in the vbullitian software. The other thing is it's hard, if one person voted.. btu than you added something that was better, than the person would want to change their vote to be with the new one? See where I'm getting to?

I like the top 5 posts idea, but would it be based on number of views?

Regarding witty quote of the day, who gets to pick?

Either of you would be fine with me. As long as I don't have to do it.

Well, thanks! Dietrich and I will alternate days of choosing a quote from one another...I mean, selecting the Quote of the Day from all posters.

Here's one to add to your files, then:
"It is by isomerized alpha acids alone that I set my mind at ease ... It is by the hops of East Kent that thoughts acquire peace ... The mouth develops puckering, The puckering becomes a warning ... It is by isomerized alpha acids alone that I set my mind at ease." - Ancient brewtat mantra

This discussion server is running on freeBSD - Why not use the good 'ole Futune program to grab quotes for you?

Don't tread on me.

I think the "favorite quotes" thread might qualify for that.
But I'm up for a new one. I'll go make it now.

Yorick: I think the quotes for Quote of the Day are from the VC posters, not random outsiders.

Besides, I am Resident Quote Mavin! (See "this".)

Posted by septimus on 07-03-2001 02:56 PM:

Hey! How many threads do I have to look at just to see all this quote competition?!? Fine: I shall alternate quote choosing with KCannon, as she clearly understands that the QOTD is to come from VC members. Therefore, by the powers vested in my by Toby, I hereby annoint her Quote Chooser extraordinaire, and together we shall rule the quote choosing universe. We Shall post these Quotes Here.

(The thread title for that one says "DB's", but I can't change it to "DB & KC," so you'll have to use your imagination)

This is what happens when you don't bother to check your own threads!

What I'd like to see for the "QOD" (I was referring that it would be something witty/funny mentioned in a post) at say, the top or bottom of the site.

People could go ahead & submit what they thought to be funny, and then someone with 5 minutes free who would be in charge would simply pick the most popular (we could get into how this would be efficiently executed later) , and it would appear for the day on the top of the VisorCentral site for a day. (that, or their could be several that alternate... ah, the possibilities!)

I've seen it on tons of sites, and I absolutely love it. Simply adding a "QOD" thread REALLY doesn't cut it.

Damn, for those who don't get it I'll go draw up a prototype.
---

And adding polls would be just as nice. It would also be nice if there was a public LOG of all of the changes made. So we would know if it was rigged, etc.

---

And for "top 5" list, I don't think it would be so bad if it was done by number of views. Maybe we could do something with the cookies so each person could set it to stuff like "top 5 rated posts, top 5 popular posts since your last visit, etc."

---

Or maybe we could just create a thread to discuss it!
